all coaches go into their positions with their own plans,ideas,thoughts and what they think is the winning formula
thats the same with assistants
they will get plenty of ideas by their past coaches and captains for that matter but alot will take it from what they read in papers and watch on tv
all good for helping the process of getting your coaching to where you want it
the best advice i can give any coaches is talk to the guys who are in the capper or have been
i love talking to tired tiger from hope valley when ever i catch up with him and payney from brahma
matty mcpherson is also someone i love listening to because these guys have a world of experience that i could only wish to have
these guys love talking to the new guys and are always happy to give pointers
you have to use the tools that are available and these guys are some of the best
second piece of advice is to get it in your head that you never stop learning doesnt matter if your new to the game or been in it for what seems ever

just trying to help guys to not be as stubborn or stupid as i was when i started
they can take it or leave it.its up to them

I did see Deeman talking to Payney on Friday night - looked like it was over an hour chat as well
Was good for us as it meant we didnt have to talk to him

Veryu true Dee Man. One of the things i learnt early on was to not try an impose too much of my own onto the guys. It is very important to use those around you that have the experience and the knowledge to your advantage. Some of it may not be as useful as others but most of the tie you can use all of it as a guide. Im in my second year as a coach and im loving every bit of it. My biggest hurdle is to not get so emotinally involved and woorying about the calls of the game instead of watching what may happen and make the changes relevant to the way the game is unfolding. I actuall spent a hell of a lot of time with the B and A grade coaches and the like to get as much as i could. Although our B grade didnt have the best results last yera the coach helped me out immensley.
It also comes down to what you said by not being too pig ehaded and not listen to true critiscism (be it constructive or not) and roll with the punches. Only 2 years in ive realised this si key to managing your team and your time better. The biggest bug bare for me is the fact that you can have your team set and even up to the point that your side is running out on the park you can have a player taken away from you to make up for emergencies in higher grades. It didnt happen a hell of a lot last year but as a player and asistant in the years previous i saw the impact it had.
