Life Membership

Postby FOURTH ESTATE » Fri Sep 02, 2011 1:24 pm

Life Membership of any football club is one of the greatest honours if not the greatest that can bestowed upon an individual. My club club currently has over 120 living life members.

To be considered for life membership to our club you must have played over 200 games.

Served on the Board of Directors for a minimum of 10 years but does not have to be consectutive

Or have displayed out standing service to the club and recommended by the BOD.

All nominations are put to a vote of the members at the AGM each year.

Curious to find out what other clubs critrea is for Life Membership

Smithfield being a sports and social club doesn't have playing life membership. They have life membership that constitutes 10 years of uninterrupted membership or 8 if you are a junior life member (100 games) along with voluntary service during this time which is voted on at the annual agm, only two can be inducted per year though.
Club games are recorded and noted though.

The United Football Club's guidelines are min 300 games or 10 years service as an official. Even then its not guaranteed, it still needs to be voted on by the committee, we have a few who have played 300+ games and still aren't life members.

Agree though, any life membership to anything, is and would be a massive honour.
If you don't like it, change it. If you don't want to change it, it can't be that bad!

Re: Life Membership

Life membership these days seems to be given out too easily in a lot of clubs, one of my biggest bones of contention is that I believe that anyone being paid to perform, be it on or off field should not have the time that they have been paid for considered as time earnt towards life membership. I know that a club that I was involved with has life members who recieved payment for the entire time that they were involved with the club. But then it is all up to each clubs constitution as to what qualifies as "LIFE MEMBERSHIP"
As with a lot of clubs where "Life Members" are not distinguished by what they have done or achieved, it annoys the f##k out of me that a genuine legend of a club (and all clubs have a least one) who have devoted much of their life without asking for anything in return are classified the same as a player who has played 200 senior games (dont get me wrong anyone who plays 200 games at any club deserves some sort of recognition) and has probably been paid or at least recieved some form of compensation but clearly are not in the same league as the real club "HERO" but they both sit there together on the "LIFE MEMBERS" board with a lot of people none the wiser.
PS, great thread.

Well what about the SAAFL. Seems now they are considering granting a league life membership to an ex employee. I would've getting a pay cheque every week was reward enough,

I always considered Life Membership as something to be cherised and as a reward for the amount of time devoted to one's area of expertise.

Many Industries & Business's confer something similar as a life time achievment award. Some institutions now have whats known as a "Hall of Fame". You don't get Life Membership in Hollywood but a our recognised in your field be a it TV, Film, Directing by the life time achievment award or a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The AFL, SANFL & WAFL all have Halls of Fame made up entirely of players with a few administators and media people.

Some people have places named after them. At Subiaco Oval the media centre is named the "Geoff Christian Media Centre" who was a long time writer of WA Football for many decades.

Even in my own industry there is no such thing as Life Membership to News Ltd. You are paid a wage or salary but you might be recognised along the way with various awards and commendations. If you have served 30 continous years service at News Ltd you are admitted into the 30 year club and receive a gold watch (5 years to go).

There will never be Life Membership to News Ltd for employes's and thats the way it should be!!!

My belief is that Life Membership to any sporting club as a player should only be conferred upon once having retired for 5 years as a player.

Christies Beach has two categories

Playing Life Membership

Can qualify under one of the following criterium:

200 Senior Games
or
10 Years Consecutive as a Senior Player
or
12 Years Accumulative as a Senior Player

Honorary Life Membership

This category works on a points system, in order to be recommended (not automatic) you have to accumulate over 100 points over a minimum 10 year period. Points are allocated for various jobs in service to the club with a maximum of 10 a year. The points allocated and accumulated are kept secret within the nominations sub-committee and the board of directors.
Playing Life Members may be awarded Honorary Life Membership for continued service.
