Does anyone care about State footy anymore?

Does anyone care about State footy anymore? The League seem to love it (no doubt becuase the exec get all expenses paid trips away) and now they are doing trips for these crap international rules hybrid games. I would rather they spent the money on lights at Thebarton.

Waste of time and money IMO. When was the last time the League asked the clubs if we should continue with this rubbish? I seem to remember the question being asked many years ago at a Delegates Meeting and the excuse was they were in the middle of a triennial carnival so they couldn't pull the pin. Can anyone name any benefits for clubs in Div 2 and below? Can anyone name any benefits full stop?

Thoughts everyone?

I don't care about it, and haven't for sometime. It should be The Best of our League V The Best of the Others.

I do not blame the kids for getting picked and wanting to play, ofcourse they do. But being Under 23, a lot of these players use this selection as a bargaining chip to head up country for more money or elsewhere. It has happened to the last 5 - 6 reps at our club, i'm sure other clubs would feel the same way. Plus and again no disrespect to the players, its not thier fault they get picked, some of these kids are not in the top 5 players at their club.

in theory its a great concept, but until saafl pick the best 21 and not under 21 or 23's whatever they do, i wont take it seriously!! i really dont mean any disrespect any of the kids who are picked. representive footy is fantastic, i miss the old state of origin days.

I think the concept of the U23's is great. i remember the years i was in it, we sometimes had up to about 8 guys that were in the team of the year, and the rest were close to making it. everyone that was eligable to play did play, and the results showed. its when you get older than 23 that the body needs the extra week break, and the family commitments start to creep into it that the players tend to then not play in the open age sides, and prefer to have that week off. but more often than not, a large majority of the u23's would gladly play in the side, and that was the reasoning for having the u23's.
I've had my shot at it, and i enjoyed everything that it had to offer, and i wouldn't want to deprive the u23's of the league a chance to experience what i was lucky enough to.
maybe just go back to playing 1 full length game each year against the vics as it use to be.
that'd at least draw a decent crowd.
and yes i do agree that the hybrid thing they could probably do away with also, as it is probably a bit unnecessary.

i think untill its a true state side (the best 21 regardless of age) the concept is dead.

It was a while back now but when i played 17's state there was no better feeling to rep your state. If i remember correctly we did have the seniors play state footy. There was a huge focus on Div 1 and 2 state sides. Then its just fallen to under 21 and 23 which is a shame as we have a massive pool of talent in which i have only seen the Div 3 guys but from all reports etc some of the older guys would represent the state i feel. Even though my time has passed to do that now i would do anything do be able to do it again.

It is a great concept and should be embraced and set up properly. Having a rep side for each division is rediculous but maybe a 3 grade state side i.e. Div 1&2 3-5 etc etc. May sound funny but getting back to state footy is another way for guys to strive for something extra and it would help the clubs in the process. I could and am probly wrong which i have no doubt someone will point out but pulling on that red guernsey is gold.

The only way to get it back to the way it was (especially against the Vics)
Open age, the best possible side
and the Curtain Raiser U21
Years ago the reason they stopped playing "proper" state footy was that WA was broke, and couldnt afford to send a team, and Tassie always struggled with money also
That ended the Carnivals
But SAAFL and the Victorians can so why not just play each other on a yearly basis
And as i say if they still want this ridicoulous underage team let them be the cutain raiser

It would bring the interest back !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

what they could do is still play the under 23 state games but every time that SA plays Victoria, they should do a double header with the the under 23 as the curtain raiser game and then the open team plays after.

I think the care factor is summed up when we are asking 16 year old kids to pull on a jumper only hours before the carnival

Funny the only person that seemed to get an all expenses paid trip was the former CEO
He pissed off the sth africa last year when he should of been here sorting out the points system
rumour is he got himself a nice penthouse suite to boot
the fact that some blokes who hardly made the best players for us got all australian is a disgrace

Ah well, all's well that ends well. He fell on his on sword in the end.

I didn't hear the conversation first hand but a friend of mine tells me he was in a conversation last week with a former exec member who'd had a little too much P155 and he blurted out that the former CEO was always going to be in the gun once the new executive dissected some of the privileges he was assuming at a financial cost to the clubs. Apparently said that he had the bluff over past executive members including and most importantly the old treasurer.

Too true on all points. Left all clubs high and dry with the points sytem hoping it would go away and didn't attend meetings I believe when it counted the most which in turn ended up with us all getting shafted with a document that has more holes in it than the financial statement of the Port Adelaide Football Club.

Will the clubs have the balls at the AGM to shaft the U/23 concept and revert back to true state football and tell West Aust to HTFU
