As much as i have been a huge advocate for Open Age State Footy, i can't seem to get excited about this weeks game V the Country Rep team. No doubt the players earn their spots on last years form, but to me it doesn't have the same pull as a supporter. Playing after the Crows game is a bit of a slap in the face too i think.

Heard it cant be played before the game as they need a 2 hour window after the rep game finishes to repair the oval and allow the AFL teams to warm up on the ground. With that in mind supporters may not go into the ground this early before the game to watch and the hope is that by playing it after the Crows that people will stick around afterwards and watch as the game can start immediately after the Crows game has finished.
For anyone who saw last years game though you soon realise that most Crows supporters pack up and leave immediately after the game and the game will be played in front of about 50 people of which 38 of them are cleaning the stands

Don't know where you heard that from, considering there are curtain raisers for every game and they don't have to give them 2 hours...

A curtain raiser would have been logical - but then, look who's organised it.

Thats my point, why not play it at Thebarton or even a local ground thats in good nick and get maybe 400 people there having a look rather than no-one.

Sorry FC the AFL requires that the oval be free at least 1 hour before an AFL game for warm ups etc.

This is correct have spoken to an AFL person this afternoon who confirmed it.

Yeah, I wouldn't have said anything if he'd said one hour... I worked there for almost 15 years, so I knew it wasn't 2 hours..

Lets hope that the SAAFL team has more than 10 players at training this week...

Thebbie Oval would be ideal for the people, like me, who couldn't give a $h1t about the Crows or Sydney and dont particulary want to pay $40 a seat. If it was played at a Thebbie and admission was chargedwould that not go SAAFL as well??

I'm a big rap for Open Age State sides....why should we limit the pool to only U/23's?? Surely if the U/23 player/s are good enough to make the State team, they should be able to make it without the age restrictions....The Open Age is also a good pulling power when clubs (particularly D1 and D2 sides) are trying to recruit ex AFL/SANFL players....the chance to play State is a good 'carrot' for them especially if considering going to Country Leagues where $$ are usually a little easier to come by!!

Also they should have played prior to the Crows....if people wanted to watch it, they would have gotten there early....if the simply dont want to watch they will leave at the ned of the Crows game anyway (dont their supporters start filing out the ground by 5 minutes into the last anyway)??? This would have allowed all the State players (Metro and Country) to hang around, watch the game and have a few beers with each other...

But apart from that little winge, good luck to Barts and the boys and hope all get through without injury....personally a little close to Round 1 for my liking.....

I think the Crows game starts at 12:40. Therefore with the 1 hour required before it started then I guess the curtain raiser would have to start about 8:00AM, everyone would still be unwrapping their chocolate easter eggs.

I sorta figured that out after the fact silent hour, I didn't realise it was a lunch time match, thought it may have been a twilight game..

It was after a Port Vs Melbourne game last yr so there was only about 50 ppl at the ground anyway

That is right. The year before was a curtain raiser to crows v west coast and the gates for the crowds dont open till around half time of the curtain-raiser, i'd probably prefer a crowd for the entire game rather than just a half, regardless of the size.
