Singing club song on oval after the game

Postby Flipper » Wed Jul 22, 2009 6:49 pm

I watched Port Power sing the club song on the oval on the weekend. It just didnt sit right with me. I havent seen it this year in Div4 but its happened a few times prev years and i think nothing is worse than seeing a club sing their song on your oval or even theirs. Whats your thoughts? How is the decision made?

I'm not a fan of singing the song on the oval, always instruct my lads to do it in the changerooms after....quite a lot of clubs in div 7 do it on the oval.

Why wouldn't you sing it on the oval? It gives something back to all the supporters.

You never know when it's going to be a lean year, don't take singing the club song for granted and always appreciate a win.

I reckon the only time you sing the song on the oval is after a GF win.

I hate teams that sing it on the oval. Doesn't sit well in my book.

Agree with the singing after the GF.
The emotions run wild and it is the best time to do it.

As for during the minor round, no need to sing on the oval. It is a lot more intimate  indoors and it sounds SOOO much better :)

Can't say I've ever cared where an opposition sings their song, I can't remember too many teams over the last few years that haven't sung on the oval.

Something we've done for about 20 years is after a win sing the song at the end of presos. Originally started after an A grade win now we do it after all grades winning. The original theory was if the A's win the club celebrates.

If you have just flogged a team by 15 or 20 goals its probably not called for but if you have won a game you were not expected to win or won a real close one its good to show some spirit.

After the way we've played in a couple of recent games, I don't care where they sing the bloody thing, as long as they win they can sing it whilst climbing the nearest big tree, just to cut me down 'cause it's f^n lonely and cold up here!

I hadn't heard of that one before, interesting though. It enforces the point that these idiosyncracies are ingrained via club tradition.

Don't see the big deal, Had a coach a few years ago who wouldn't allow it. Was brought up in juniors singing it after a win on the ground, shouldnt see why it should differ playing seniors. After all peoples we're only playing amateurs

I cant see the problem with singing it on the oval after a win ?? Directly after a win is when the emotions are the highest and the song is usually belted out with gusto both to reward your teams supporters and to celebrate respectfully in front of the opposition team and their supporters. I have never been insulted or offended by an opposition team singing it when we have lost so I enjoy singing it on the oval when we win.

I do however always encourage the boys to sing it again in the rooms. Just something I like doing. Except at Adelaide Lutheran on the weekend because we had to sing it in shifts because only 8 lads could fit in the rooms at once... ;)

We, Adelaide Lutheran (from memory) :(
have a short chant (A bulldog for me) we do on the oval then a longer song (Oh were from Bulldog park) we do inside.

Agreed Choccies. Gotta sing it on the oval to pay respect to your supporters who sit in the rain for most the day, and def in the changerooms afterwards to let the opposition know that they are 2nd best for the day.

Chin up pal. Still 4 games left and maybe 4 more chances to sing it before the year is through !! ;)
