We manage to do okay thanks to a spread of loyal sponsors and a dedicated committee who consistently organise popular and well attended social events.
The idea of paying players has been floated in the past, but it was unanimously decided to be a little more egalitarian with our incentives. After a bit of number crunching at the end of 2008 and again at the end of 2009, increases were made to best player awards and to the A Grade players' drink cards. As yet we are not in a financial position to pay individual players (on top of current incentives), and perhaps from a philosophical point of view we aren't either.
If players are boasting about being paid, then so be it. You can't control what people say. I'm sure the boys have been having a good laugh about it though.
You know as far as im concerned who cares what other clubs do or how much they pay players (if indeed they do) end of the day its more important to worry about the progress and development of your own club for the future.
Sure splashing some money might buy you some quick fix success to get you up the divs but really the future of the clubs relies on the homegrown players, the life members, the true supporters of the club because you know once the success goes and the money drys these are the people to bring you back up of the ground.
Good example is a few years ago at Kilburn they spent a bucket load of $$ on blokes - more than the salary its rumored - made the finals, lost the semi, went to div 3 then because of Edwardstown moving elected for divvy2, all the "Gun players" on the big coin jumped ship and well look at Kilburn now, sinking faster than a beer at a bucks show!
