Well done mate ;)

Well done to Beau on 100 games and maybe he will give himself a good write up in the budget!

If i was a betting man then i'd bet that there will be some mention somewhere this week!

At the moment i don't think its compulsory to put one in for A Grade, but i think it should be, each game i think every single umpire should have a report written about them, even if it is 3 or 4 questions multiple choice, and a small comments section.

The people that make the decisions can then start to see trends, if in 5 match reports in a row there are comments on high tackles from one umpire, or comments about a particular topic, then maybe an umpires observer can go out and have a look and give some constructive comments to the umpire in question.

For club umpires if there are trends on the ump reports about a particular topic then a memo can be sent to the club stating that there has been a trend that he may need to review his interpretation, or if there are trends where the ump report says he is blatantly cheating then the ump observer can head out and have a look, and if he believes this to be true then he can send the club a letter explaining that the saafl have observed him after consistant reports stating he is cheating (or however you want to put it) and it needs to be adressed.

Or out of ten on each of the following:

Control of the game.
Communication.
Inerpretation.
Then a small comment.

Elizabeth v Hope Valley this week should be interesting. Be interesting to see if we can carry the good form from last week into this one and the remainder of the season. Valley seem very very stiff comp at home and should be a good battle.

The Metro West FL have a rating system for umpires. My mate coaches our under 12's and at the end of each game he fills out a report on the umpires performance. He likes the idea, so do I.

It's also done in the ASCA in section 1. Captains fill out a report after a game. Again, IMO it works well.

There's no reason why the SAAFL can't organise a report system for umpires, it will make the league better IMO.

thats kids footy though DK and its a vital feedback because you often have teenagers umpiring games or learner umpires..in the msjfl they wear a green top as opposed to an orange top for the normal umpires and some of the umpires are not much older than the kids that are playing..so the feedback is fairly important..i just think its wasted time and pen ink in the seniors..

There's no reason why they can't but they won't as they can't take any constructive criticism directed at umpires.
In their eyes they are doing a fantastic job, Oates & Co are kidding themselves.

Well we complained numerous times about that Trevor bloke and he seems to have gone missing?? Unless he just gave it away this year. Also Barry Lewis is down in Div 7 after we put in a complaint about his effort out at Elizabeth this year.

Maybe it's just a coincidence, but it seemed to have worked for us.

I think the main problem here is this, the clubs only send in feedback when it is negative (mostly), so as far as oates & co look see it, its just the clubs whinging. If the clubs were made to do it each week regardless, which would promote some positive feedback, you may see the negative feedback being addressed more often.

As far as the comment regarding reports for junior umpires and the fact that they are mostly teenagers and still learning the trade, many of those umpires still have more experience, more accreditation, and more of a clue, than a lot of club umpires, which is why i think these reports should not just be for saafl appointed umpires, but also all umpires across the comp.

Yes its a lot of paperwork, and yes its extra man hours to review all this paperwork, but it may just be the best investment in the umpiring department, because it will not only sound out any problems, but it can also be used as a tool to recruit good umpires up to A Grade level, or identify umpires that may only need 1 or 2 more strings to thier bow to become good umpires, which is what the league, and everyone on this forum desperately wants.

As much as we all want to keep our club umpires if we find a good one, im sure in the bigger picture we would all rather them be educated so the best of them can move upward and strenghten our A Grade lot.

ASCA's cricket umpire reports are great, although i did have to re-write one after our captain had a few lbw decisions turned down when he was bowling!
