Hope Valley would nearly have a full side of ex junior players playing in div 1 and div 2 and the hills league currently that could easily get the club back up to the higher divisions it should be playing in. When they're 16 or 17 the league clubs push them away from the lower ranked clubs when they don't get selected or if they have a bye and they never come back. Then they develop the "you're in too low a division" mentality, not realising that if they stuck around and played, the club could get higher up and be able to keep these young guns coming through the ranks in the future.

It would only take a few of these young kids to realise this and come back and the last 5 or 6 years would have been a whole lot different. I know that Gepps Cross, Broadview and Birdwood to name a few would be different sides if they lost all their ex Hope Valley boys. Hopefully this year we can push for div 5 and who knows, you might see some old faces start to return. It would be a hard train to stop once it got going...

...and don't worry sharky, we're proud of our club no matter what division we play in!!

Glad to see the passion is still there, don't get me wrong, good club rooms, great lights now, but can't blame kids for trying out at higher clubs, happens to all clubs. Why don't they want to come back??? Is it a culture thing????

I don't think its a culture thing - I think its more that when they are young, and are talented that they don't necessarily have the passion for the club that some of the older blokes do, and so wish to play in a higher division. Also, as Dutchy said, when they are at SANFL clubs, they are pushed to play for higher division SAAFL clubs, which makes it difficult to keep them.

I think players such as Palmer, Lunn, Holyrhim, Philpott, Appleby and Piliciewicz (or however you spell it), and I'm sure there are more, could potentially still be out at the valleys, had we been in a higher division. I also think if players such as these had stayed at the club after juniors then we would be in a better division than we currently are - but thats life!!

Birdwood - P Low, A Rowett, J Curtis, R Williams. Broadview - C Appleby, B Appleby, R Richter.
Gepps Cross - J Palmer, J Phillpott, A Lunn, T Holyrim, D Moore. CBCOC - N Piliciwecz
Mount Lofty - B Burch. Uraidla - M Anderson

9 of these players played in our U/17's premiership a few years back. A few of them have said if we can get up to
div 5 they'll look at coming back. I know it does happen to a lot of clubs, but i guess where I was going with it was defending
sharky's comment of us not being proud of our club and explaining how tough it is to get higher up when we constantly lose
these talented youngsters...

Looking forward to the triple header at Golden Grove on Saturday. Great way to kick off the North East Cup and both sides travelling pretty good in all 3 grades. Should get a big crowd there too
