This has been an issue for a few years now. I could be worng, but I believe that this is the case.

Reckon you're on the money there BigDaddy.

Does anyone else think that it is a disgrace for a Club (or Club's) to be penalised for being proactive and helping to achieve independant financial viability!? Afterall, you need all the money you can get just to pay SAAFL fees.

Did anyone actually see the incident? From what I've heard from Broadview the guy got 5 matches with no evidence against him for apparently hitting Merritt in the back of the head?!? Can anyone confirm or deny any of this?

The thing that has got me stuffed, is how a player can lodge a complaint a week after the game and get a hearing and suspension on only the player's and accused evidence??? Sets a pretty dangerous precident don't you think. Lose a game by 5 goal, cry foul of an incident and get a player suspended. Could become a regular occurance.

Seems the SAAFL was copying the precedent set by the AFL with the St Kilda incident!!

Sharky is 100%correct. Tony Burgess announced his resignation on Sat. night. He has done a terrific job in difficult circumstances and will be sorely missed and Westies should take a good look at him.

Spoke with a couple of the Broadview boys & they are filthy with Merritt, referred to him as a dog, which seems a fair assessment given the information that was passed onto to me. No umpires sighted the "incident" the only "witness" was that female trainer for Gaza the one who sports a pink dyed streak in her hair... The whole thing stinks Merritt has certainly broken the unwritten code. Zanker must have been on the ground to be able to land a head-but between Merritt's massive ears fair height discrepancy...
Jayne, I understand it wasn't the trainer with the pink through her hair but one of the assistant coaches wife from Gaza. Thinks she's SAAFL's answer to Carolyn Wilson and has plenty to say. Whilst Gaza have played a dog act part in this apparently Zanker didn't do himself any favours with some half arsed answers at the tribunal that didn't help.

This incident just keeps getting worse. Zanker probably didn't think he was going to get suspended, so just gave stupid answers. But how can the tribunal take the word of an assistant coaches wife, someone who would obviously have an inside interest in him being suspended.

It's always bemused me that they run by the name of amateur league and then act like it. Amateur should only be relevant to those who play not those who administer it at Tynte Street.

Ill set the record straight, after the game, the umpire and the Gaza fellow who aprently got hit were at the bar having a drink, and discussing the game. The Gaza fella said 2 the umpire "dnt you c me get hit", umpire answer "no i dnt but if you think it was reportable you can protest it" and thats wat he did. heard from the horse mouth

If that's right and I'm sure there's no reason to doubt you Amo it only endorses Rotters previous post about Amateur hour at Tynte Street. The aspect of this story I find really hypocritical is Merritt and his cohorts at Gaza condemmed my club last year for raising (on video I might add) Nick Heath being king hit from behind by Radetti causing 3 different fractures in his cheekbone and jaw and ending his season. Nick Heath was ruled out for the remainder of the season (3 months) and Radetti got three. I reckon Zanker should've been suspended for more for not doing a good enough job on Merritt and not lining Radetti up while he had the chance,

How weak is Merrett in laying a report. He couldnt have been too bad if he was drinking with the ump after the game.

After hearing a few stories about this case, it just gets more confusing. Apparently during the hearing, when asked if any players reminstrated with Zanker after the incident, everyone, (all witnesses inc Merret), said 'no' apart from the lady witness. Now if you see a blatent headbutt to one of your team-mates, i'm sure it would induce a brawl situation. Quite suspect i reckon. It appears that the hearing absorbed every bit of info from the trainer, and left the players to just sit there.

Spot on, i wouldn't have had a defence either if i was up on a charge like that, surely he woulda thought the case would have been dismissed due to lack of evidence????? Very very interesting that they didn't lodge the complaint before the Broadview v Goodwood game, musta really wanted top spot.

Due to the lack of evidence it must have taken Gaza a week to put together their "story" and then rehearse it over and over ..........

Few coaching positions up for grabs this coming year. So far we have ROCS, Broadview, Gepps (Roey probably has it but no signature yet) and Henley.

Welcome back to Div 1, Port Districts and Seaton. Lets see if you can handle more than 1 or 2 years up with the big boys this time.

Not sure at this stage, Roe was in talks with Gepps and apparently had all but signed, so i guess their is still a chance. Still has a great friendship and respect for and with the players. Be silly not to try and get 'The Weed' for the name and maybe player pulling power, but also i think the club would be interseted in keeping it within the club, maybe a past player or associate. Maybe a playing coach?? Early stages so far, haven't heard anything of real conviction.
