That's right. Umpires should know the rules when they arrive. Not difficult to comprehend I wouldn't have thought.

Seemingly, be fine if the umpires were only assigned one or two age groups.

There are pretty much different sets of rules for every 2 year bracket age groups, some can tackle and not bump, others the other way around, once bounce max in some grades, two in others, no smothering in some, no stealing in others, zones and bibs in others where mids can't score.

Mate, it's harder than you think, a couple of years ago I was umpiring Under 14's to A Grade in the APFL, Under 16's to A Grade in the SAWFL and Under 6's to Under 16's in the NEMJFA all on the one weekend, I was forever just clarifying the rules with both coaches prior to the game if I had anything under the 13 year old bracket.

I've got a printout in my car of the basic rules for each grade so I can have quick refresher depending on what grade it is. In the first round I umpired U7's, U9's and U12's all in a row. It is tough to make split second decisions when there are different rules. I paid a 6m kick a mark in the U12's game. The young lads gave me a bit of a ribbing! It's definitely harder than you think and harder than I thought it would be

Well done S Demon, credit to you. I have no problem with what you're saying and I agree, it would be VERY difficult to umpire the grades as you go through the day.

U6 through 8's play by the same rules (slightly bigger ground I think) and is the first game of the day.

Yep you're correct, same rules for U6-U8 so by rights there should be less confusion early on in the day

I'm sure everyone will be happy to know the umpire we had tonight - aged approx 18, was absolutely awesome. Paid marks where there was a two handed intent to mark, paid smothering and there wasn't one instance of stripping the ball. There was no need for him to clarify or seek to know the rules. He knew them. He came ready to umpire U8's as we expected. Awesome effort lad.

Anyone played the "last touch" rule in the juniors before?

No problem, had not encountered it at all until yesterday. Wasnt sure if it was meant to be done the whole season or a new directive.

Not bagging anyone was just a question

I think you missed my sarcasm

but seriously they could simply have a ball up 10 meters inside the boundary

boundary umpires are something junior footy does not need, unless the boundary umpire is under the age of 16

Two incidents in the last week, one in Melbourne and one in Adelaide involving parent boundary umpires probably points to the less amount of PARENT participation in junior footy, the better it will be

I did, no emoji

As I said I am not bagging anyone it was just a question

Most games the junior umpires have been very good.

Some umpires judge it differently, it is a little annoying and confusing for the kids.

They could simply just continue the rules now for U6-10 into U11-U16. The kids are already used to it anyway. A high number of parents I've come across this year have little idea about what they are doing when boundary umpiring...

It is rather comical, my 11 year old son boundary umpires A Grade in the APFL and has no problem lobbing the ball in up over both ruckmen's foreheads, keeping up with the play, finding the right position and making the right calls, I see it messy in his own football when dad's do the job.

At what age group should kids HAVE to train regardless of weather conditions?

Just want a feel of other thoughts.

That old cliche LOL. So little Johnny who's 8 years old should train when it's pissing down so he can catch a cold and have mum or dad take time off work to sit home with him because he can't go to school?

You're not alone with that thought process though.
