Round 16:
Three rounds to go, and the battle for position is really heating up - battles within battles, emerging as we see just 2 wins separate 5th and 10th.
Ingle Farm still have a chance to steal 2nd spot.. Brahma still can steal 3rd.. any of the bottom 6 sides can still make the finals - or end up in the relegation zone.. cracking round of football coming up, lets have a closer look:
West Croydon v Fitzroy: The West Croydon juggernaut rolled on last Saturday, this time a 51 point victory at the country club in the city Houghton. O'Toole responded to his omission from the SAFooty D6 TOTY with a game high 3 goals along with dangerous Wilson. Symonds, Birch and Horsman outstanding all day as the Hawks had to battle hard against the Raiders. Little birdy tells me though, the win came at a cost for the flag fancies, with injures to Sumner and Phillips putting a dent in the Hawks stocks. This week they host Fitzroy, who only weeks ago I had pencilled in for D7 next season, have rocketed back up the ladder and into finals contention. Wheadon proving a revelation for their return to form, the young forward picked up 7 majors at the weekend as he combined with Avery, MacKinnon and Makris to drive a stake firmly into the heart of the Adelaide Lutheran hearts. The challenges don't get much bigger this week though, and the Roys will need to find something special to upset the Hawks, but it is the time of the season for upsets.. Percentage will be key in this encounter - the Lions will be looking to get as close as possible if they cant win. Will the Hawks take their foot off the gas for a moment? Can the Roys do the unthinkable?
Mawson Lakes v Houghton Districts: Arguably one of the matches of the round, the Lakes host fellow finals hopeful Houghton in a must win clash for both sides. At the weekend the Mozzies ventured out to face final bound Ingle Farm at Rowe Park, and were able to stay in the clash for most of the game before the class from the Farmers blew the match out. Ralph up forward with Carr was a potent combination and Bennett across half forward proved a difficult match up. Ung fed off McCammon all day, but the Lakes lacked depth and polish - they looked a bit understrength from earlier in the season, and it took its toll on the scoreboard. Houghton not dissimilar at the weekend, hosted the Mighty Hawks, and whilst they matched them earlier, they couldn't sustain and ended up 51 point losers - still a remarkable improvement on their first encounter when the Hawks kicked 31 goals and won by 165pts. Spread of goal kickers for the Raiders with no multiples, and Davis, Bray led the charge with McMurtrie continuing his outstanding season. A win here for Mawson Lakes would almost all but secure that 5th spot on the ladder depending on other results - a loss and a win for the Raiders opens up their chances and sets up and intriguing battle over the next two weeks. Mawson Lakes for me have a fraction too much class, and should get the job done - just.
Woodville South v Mitchell Park: If West Croydon is the hardest test in this div, then Woody South would be a very close 2nd. The Cats have hardly put a foot wrong this year as they look to secure a top 2 finish and set up a shot at a return to D5. Last week was a journey out to Trinity to face the Jekyll and Hyde outfit of TOS, and whilst not convincing managed to lock away 2pts. Ahmed led the charge with 5 majors as Hains, McCulloch and Gosling had big days for the Cats. This week they host the resurgent Mitchell Park, who couldn't stop the damaging Aloisi and Brooks, as they fell to finals bound Brahma by 37 points. Halime once again showed his class with 4 goals, as Zerna, Walczak and Pike also continued strong seasons. They'll be hoping to get Bamford back for this clash, and they'll need to be at their best to topple the mighty Cats, but the Lions have shown at times they are more than capable. They're currently the side best positioned to challenge for 5th spot, with their percentage being not far off - regardless of result the Lions will need to fight hard for 4 quarters to limit any damage to that percentage, if not win.
Adelaide Lutheran v Trinity OS: Adelaide Lutheran languishing at the bottom of the ladder, and it looks a long way back for the Dogs. Over the coming weeks they face sides desperate to play finals and eager for wins. They'll need to be at their best to impact on those games and avoid relegation. Elms did his best Saturday to get his side up with 5 goals in a best afield performance. McFarlane and Richter were solid while Fin Borgas's return from injury yielded instant results and showed how much they've missed him. A 6 goal to 3 2nd quarter lost if for Luthies and they'll want to be better this week as they host the Jekyll and Hyde of TOS. Trinity OS this season have shown when on and playing well can match it with the best - a draw to West Croydon, close loses to the top sides.. and then have shown they are susceptible against the lower sides in matches they must win. Spurr with 6 goals on Saturday did the best he could to get his beloved TOS the points, and along with O'Hara, Peters, MacPhail and Maher rounded out the best. The ability is there for the Lions if they can fire, it's just a matter of what TOS shows up on the day. If Adelaide Lutheran can stop MacPhail getting out the back, keep Maher quiet and find match ups for the big forwards of Cotter and O'Hara as well as the smaller quicker forwards of Perry and Burne then they may be a chance.. but I'm not sure they have the cattle to match up with TOS and the Lions should bounce back into the winners circle here.
Brahma Lodge v Ingle Farm: Saved for last, this to me is the match of the round. So much at stake for both sides, Ingle Farm would be keeping a close eye on Woody South, and a win here sets up a mouth watering Rd 18 clash for 2nd place.. Brahma Lodge likewise would be eager to leap frog the Farmers, and if they can beat them Sat with a superior percentage it could come down to Rd 18 as to who secures the double chance. Brahma ventured to Mitchell Park at the weekend and it was Aloisi (6 goals) and Brooks (5 goals) who did the damage up forward, as Spriggs responded to recent negative media attention with a strong performance, supported by Taylor who earned a much deserved call up from the B grade and Cosenza wound back the clock. Tyson Lees proving a handy recruit this season, in just his second season of footy has worked his way up the grades and into the best. For Ingle Farm, they did what was required at the weekend, in front of a home crowd of past players, the Farmers honoured champions of yesteryear with a comprehensive four quarter effort against the lakes. With the margin swaying around 3 goals for most of the game, the dogs found an extra gear in the last and roared away to a 46 point win. Sanderson with 4 goals firmly made a statement with his performance, and has me seeing him in a different light this week, after last week stating he was just a serviceable player. Sandery enjoyed his call up from the B grade. Huge game this weekend, sides will approach this as their first final for the year, and two sides that like to score freely this could be an epic shootout. Winner finishes top 3.. loses plays elimination final.
