Serious question on Grand Final venues, why do certain ovals/clubs get to host Grand Finals each year?? ie..PNU, Kilburn, Salisbury, Campbelltown, Hope Valley, Kenilworth etc...

Maybe this is a question I should ask GG committee, but our ground is fully fenced (which FC has said is a prerequisite) out at Harpers but is not utilised for any GF's. Do clubs have to apply to SAAFL HQ to host GF's??

This is not a crack at the clubs hosting just a curiosity. Am sure I can name other grounds that are fenced but not utilised. Just seems the same clubs get to host GF's each year, therefore the chance to earn extra $$$$.

Fencing is a pre=requisite.

I always wondered why you lot never put in for finals - but I figured it was because you always had teams playing so didn't have the manpower. Your ovals would be a godsend this week, I'll tell you that right now.

TTG is fenced but don't have West End and cant have finals

Plympton are in GF's and therefore won't be using their oval
Rocs and PNU are in finals and their ovals can't be used

SAAFL asked us to host the Div 7/7R GF about 7 or 8 years ago (Blackfriars OS first year/flag I believe it was). We were happy to do it but surprised the league asked us since we have minimal parking and the oval isn't fenced off. Highly doubt we will get a GF again.

It wouldn't cost you much to fence off your ground Suri as you've got neighbours on either side, it'd really only be eastern and western boundaries. With your facilities I don't see any reason you wouldn't make your money back and then some.

I guess other clubs may wait on the sucesses or otherwise of the Broadview trial (who have bugger all parking too btw) to perhaps think about applying next year.

But then I hear the worlds smallest council area may not let you put fencing up ;)

I thought Dennis would be all over it!

Parking is a big thing I think, we are lucky that around our outer side we can have the cars go three deep. Also think it creates a better and bigger atmosphere with cars all around the ground.

I think over the summer a lot more infra-structure (paving, verandah, kitchen extension, electronic scoreboard, hopefully light towers) will be put in place so will eventually be a great viewing area on the new oval. Would be great for the club financially to host GF's.

But I think your right with a few of a senior sides being involved in GF's the last couple of years would make it hard on the staffing/volunteer side of things.

I wondered why all the spare paving was sitting on the other side of fence outside the changerooms.

I was going to offer to buy them for my new house ;)

Not sure Dennis has put that much thought into hosting another GF. We'll just have to wait until we don't have teams in GFs to do it anyway, with the C's playing ROCS in the C1 GF this Saturday we've had at least one team in a GF since 2007.

I don't recommend hosting them if you have teams still in the finals. We had 2 x GF's last year and the A grade was in their own GF. Nearly everyone we asked to help said no because they wanted to go watch the A grade. Luckily some junior parents and cricketers stepped up to help us last minute. We enjoy hosting neutral Grand Finals though. Sometimes it's nice to watch a game of footy with a good atmosphere and not have to worry about if your team is winning! We nearly missed out this year, but fortunately we got a couple and will have all hands on deck to help during the day

They use to, but it cost the league to have the games at SANFL Ovals. We played a Grand Final at Richmond Oval in '09, not sure many finals have been played at SANFL ovals since then.
Since the league has gotten their hands on Thebarton they make the money during finals rather then having to spend it, that's why the Div 1 and 2 started the week after everyone else so they could have 3 Saturdays of GF's rather then 2. More money into the SAAFL pockets this way.

It used to happen but the clubs requested that the league give the finals back to SAAFL clubs - and fair enough too!! The league listened and gave the clubs what they wanted.

Not sure why this is even coming up. All the GF ovals are covered locally by SAAFL clubs. No need to go down the SANFL path again

Just on the issue of parking, there aren't many SAAFL or even SANFL clubs that do have adequate parking facilities, even Adelaide Airport Stadium. Every final I've been to has had cars parking down all the streets surrounding the oval.

Watched a couple of SFL Grand Finals at Nourlunga & when you get around 4,000-5,000 like they do its a very good atmosphere.
