I think you could also put that in the category of "crossing the white line" which I explained also, as it is something out of the ordinary.

It hasnt crossed the white line has it though it has happened on the field.

I said you could probably put it in that category, are you just in the mood to argue or something?

Bringing a weapon onto the field would be something you could place in the same category.

To suggest you would NEVER go to the police is folly. I doubt any of us will ever even know someone involved in anything serious enough to warrant police involvement but there is always the chance of something serious enough happening. The question as mentioned before is proof. I'd have thought it would take something like video evidence to expect to get anywhere.

As for missing work because of injury, that sort of thing can happen anytime you step on the field. If it's such a serious worry then insurance is the way to go. In some cases you might be able to sue the SAAFL for negligence but I imagine you'd be pushing the proverbial.

Overall, the principal of the life bans coming in for those serious thugs or serial offenders is a good one. They just need to fix the farce that is the tribunal to make it work properly and the retrospective nature of it when it came in was a serious miscarriage. I do know the older guys say football used to be legalised thuggery. I know one guy said that with some matches it was almost obligatory to whack each other before you could start thinking about playing.

No just disagree with your opinion that you would never ger police involved for an on field incident. As you would have read people have suffered severe injuries from disgusting acts that if happened in society would be a police matter so just because its on a football field it is ok?

thats exactly my point,

remember when posting im talking about the behind play, a person not looking type incident, not a bit of push and shove, not a hip and shoulder accidently gone wrong, not two blokes having a roll around.

I don't have a problem if someone would want to take further action for a behind the play incident. Regardless of the level we play we're playing for the enjoyment and we all accept that there is injury and accidents but nobody expects to get their head smashed in from off the ball thuggish acts which can have much more ramifications than just missing games of football.

we had a bloke who was sent off for punching a bloke, he ran upstairs, asked the bar staff for a screwdriver and then tried to go back on brandishing it in his sock. He was restrained from doing so and immediately kicked out of the club. But if he went on the field with that object and something happened to another player, I'd be taking that much higher than the tribunal if I was the player or club involved. And I'm sure the police would think so too.

Reminds me of that incident a few years back when a para hills lad tried to bring a meat cleaver that was in his bag out onto the field to go at a gepps cross player. Insanity!

Cops and the law should be left out of the equation unless were talking about weapons.

The day cops are called for a hit behind play is the day footy starts to die. What happens on the field stays on the field, otherwise we will have people sueing all the time and when ever a juniour gets injured, their mum and dad will want to sue.

You step onto the ground without having sick leave or income insurance than your an idiot, footy is fun but working/money is more important

Bullcrap, I have played nearlly 300 games of amateur football and have been lucky enough to not have anything happen to me but I would have no problem if some idiot had a pot shot at me on the footy field and I felt that it warranted it I would happily go to the police. Each year I dont sign up to get king hit, it is gutless and has no place on the footy field. It has no place in society so why should it on the field? I cant now and never have understood why it is accepted on the footy field? If you did it at a pub you would be arrested and charged.

Good, hard and fair hip and shoulders are part of the game. Dirty sniping punches are not.

I do agree with one point, you should not walk onto the ground without some sort of insurance, most of us dont make money out of playing this game so we need to protect what does pay the bills.

Think it is totally absurd to say its ok to belt someone behind play whilst he isnt aware of it ( two blokes going toe to toe different story). I have had my fair share of stoushes on the ground, one incident i regret was trying to belt someone before the start of the game, he was a sneaky half forward i was unfit and had a brain fade, lucky i cant throw a good punch and no damage done. Now if i broke his jaw or worse i see no reason that this man shouldnt of had me charged with assault. No need for Mindless Violence on a footy field. We are in the 21st century

If an incident occurs behind the play as the first post mentioned, I believe you have to look at the seriousness of it. If its a cheap shot punch in the guts, you would probably let that slide. But when we talk about king hits, broken jaws etc, there is no place for that. Straight out assault and off to the police. OK the police would get 2 sides to the story but I would still be reporting it.
To the people who say, no, I wouldn't bother, I ask you this. You are on the sidelines watching your 18 year old son playing and 100 metres off the ball an opposition player king hits him and breaks his jaw. What would you do? Say, sorry son, that's football. I don't think so.
No place for violence on the field. From my watching and playing many games in different leagues, It is a small minority that are the thugs, but once a jaw is broken, it's broken.
