I find it laughable that narrow minded people have this opinion. It’s just a reflection of your own club’s values. Clubs like SHOC and Uni probably could pay players, but choose not to. Don’t want to. They’d rather play in D2,3,4 or wherever, rather than compromise this fact. I know past and present players and board members at both clubs and they are proud that players play for the sake of playing. Imagine that?! As it happens, both clubs have recently lost a number of players to the lure of the country footy $$. Clubs like yours Shrek will always have a chip on their shoulder because the only way to win a flag is by spending big. This dates back to the days when the SAAFL was meant to be amateur and everyone knew of the ridiculous money spent to get players to Lionel Ave. So what happened when the well ran dry? What a slide! So now as you climb back up, a new rule has come in to stop clubs buying premierships and oops – you cry, “We made a mistake!” Unlike the previous ‘amateur’ and then ‘salary cap’ rules, this one can’t be hidden under the table.

Just looked through all of your previous posts mate. Very negative.

My guess is you hate all these clubs because you couldn't get picked in the As no matter how many times you changed clubs.

I'll second that and the funniest thing is now Kilburn will have to pay a player in the B grade

Do University Pay Players

Postby Dols » Thu May 10, 2012 9:24 am

Don't know what happens these days but back in the early 90's when Noel annear left riverside to coach Uni for big money, he took a few players with him. I know that those players were getting paid. The committee at the time wasn't entirely happy but they accepted it, especially when they started winning games.

Untrue, shocs never paid and played in 2 Div 1 GFs and lost last years by a kick. It can be done, players have to play for the right reasons.

The club might not pay but the players certainly do get looked after. It might not be cash but the incentives are very good. Job openings have an amazing way of happening if you play for the right college club and are well connected. Adelaide College never paid their players but if you wanted a teaching post in the city you played for them or off to the country you went. That is a fact until somebody called their bluff and threatened to expose them.

So the college might not pay direct but as i have always said
"It is a good career move to play for Uni" or any other college side

the "old school tie" payment scheme is a way that clubs like Uni, SHOC's, PAC, Saints get away with either not paying cash or very little.

some would consider getting a $50k job a year getting paid by the club and in essence it is. but at the same time 9 out of 10 blokes have the degree and are just given a foot in the door. which is one of the main reasons parents send their kids to these types of schools in the first place.

eg. seb paynter this year went to Uni because they found him a job. We tried the same thing with Seb (hes an old scholar 0 pointer and his brother was going to play were ever he did) and he said he'd honor the job that uni got him.

there are always stories from mates of mates who know someone who is getting cash from Uni. but roger me if I've ever met anyone who actually is.

I love grapes. With grapes, you always get another chance. You know, if you have a crappy apple or a peach, you’re stuck with that crappy piece of fruit. If you have a crappy grape, no problem-just move on to the next. ‘Grapes: The Fruit of Hope.
