Smithfield has always been a hostile environment and I've been going there since the late 90's. Back then the top teams went in a bus, changed in a bus some 200 metres from the clubrooms, ran on to the ground, played a tough hard game and win or lose straight back on the bus and back to their club. It's a real pity that for all the hard work they have done things havn't changed in all that time. There are some terrific people in the 'inner sactum' who work tirelessly for the club they love, maybe we should be offering support to them and not be to eager to put them all in the same catagory. :(

Are you for real? That is the biggest load of bullshit I've read on here in a long time. I've seen maybe 5 southern-most clubs travel by bus since 1995 for travel reasons, I've seen one skirmish in the crowd and that was caused by some thugs from another club that I wont mention who began assaulting an assistant coach in Smithfield's coaches box.
There was an ugly incident at Pulteney during a B Grade match about 6 years ago that was dealt with but apart from that and what happened on Saturday evening you are just full of hot air.
So to get on here and praise and bag in the one sentence is just a pathetic cop out, I don't think Mitchell Park has been full of harp playing Cherubs for the past twenty years either champ.

No bullshit LM. I was on those buses and my son was a player, and yes Foodland pies were on the menu PLUS Southwark beer and yes it was a southern club, NOT Mitchell Park. It had nothing to do with travel only due diligence because the club, players and coaching staff were fine, but it was who turned up on the day that could of changed the fun. Never ugly incidents I might ad. It was not meant as a go at the club and the praising bit was what I saw last year in Div 7, so many people dedicated to seeing the club get up. Bloody hell man, I'm on your side.

No need to apologise yankman I thought what you posted was more complimentary than insulting. Geez LM take a chill pill!!! I've played against Smithfield many times out there and never had a problem. In fact last time I was there a free beer was even put on the bar for myself and our players.

When we played there early on this year I found them to be quite hospitible, they invited us in after the game and also gave us a free jug of beer. Had a good chat to their coach and people in the club.

Seemed fine!

If only half of what was reported is true, the saafl should take action. Period. Do nothing and nothing will change
Where's Bill? Yeah... Hmm... Bill is on the Villa Quatro, on the road to Salina. I will draw you a map.

Never had an issue with Smithfield. In fact always enjoyed our encounters and they always had a few tallented blokes who'd rip you a new one.
Always enjoyed a beer there after the game and LM is still the only bloke I've met on SA Footy who came from the crowd and pulled me out of a warm up.... Any bloke who stops me from excessive running is a friend of mine ;)

Ditto at Mitchell Park last year too LK. The lads went in for a beer after the game and the Smithfield folk were very hospitable. It's easy to say the League should act, but who do they punish? That's my thoughts. :?

The fight aside was the night a success?

Was there a massive crowd?

Did the club rake in enormous new revenue which they wouldnt else have?

Is the community who attended, with exception to the brawlers, now buzzing from last week after the suburb held an enjoyable community event

Spot on comment. I remember playing there last year and one of their young lads got a bit fired up at me for some reason but was told to pull his head in pretty quick by one their senior guys. The young guy then apologised...

What ever happened Saturday night shouldn't reflect the club because it sounds like it is based on some outsiders strolling in to watch a night game. Could have happened anywhere...

the quicker everyone else moves on, the quicker they can move on and reduce the damage it does to their club.

The bigger issue is the thug who targeted a couple of the Ingle Farm players with off-the-ball hits. Will he be lining up for Smithfield again?

Agree. My understanding is that after the game, senior officials from SFC advised IFFC reps that this individual would never play for SFC again. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

What people have to remember is that its not the Smithfield Football Club who have caused the drama.

Yes these people that attend are causing problems which means it reflects on the Smithfield Football Club, but its a very delicate situation. These guys are not just teenage punks that the footy club president can walk up to and ask them to move on. Its also not as simple as hiring a couple of security guards for the day.

Also how many other grounds are as close to a pub and bottle o as the Smithfield Footy Club, i wouldnt think to many. This gives alot more people the oppurtunity to drink alot cheaper and then have easy access to more alcohol.

There are alot of really good people at the Smithfield Club and im sure they would love to be involved in getting rid of the trouble makers. Sometimes though people have to look after themselves and not get involved.

The only way i can see this problem being resolved is the people involved who really do care for the football club need to start telling their mates to pull their heads in and save the crap for the nightclubs on a Saturday night.

Like Sento said if there was no stupid antagonising from the Smithfield player the incident would probably never happened.

The clubs involved can't ban players? They would know who is associated with the troublemakers. From all reports this isn't a new phenomenon at this ground with the clubs involved, so there is clearly a link there. Need to break that link.

Phantom Gossiper wrote:Step 2 - Reschedule all home games to Thebarton and get the clubs to provide a guest list. Hire security to ensure no-one else can attend. Ban alcohol. Then clubs lose revenue from canteen/bar takings, and of course Thebarton wouldn't be free, would have to pay for the hire. Not to mention then the travel, and losing the advantage of playing at home
So be it. Greater good and all that. I am sure the SAFFL could accommodate if need be.

Mate just this week you were proposing much more serious actions that would hurt the clubs involved than this! ;)

Phantom Gossiper wrote:Step 3 - Double, triple, quadruple security.Again money.. whose going to foot the bill?
So the answer is its too expensive?

Money is one of the easier problems to solve if the right people put their minds on it.

Phantom Gossiper wrote:Step 4 - If it turns out there are too many people associated within the clubs involved for them to field a team, so be it. Fold them. Then the players move on to another club, so effectively all you are doing is punishing those who are there for the right reasons and doing a good job
Correct. Unfortunate, but IMO if nothing else works and these people are still attending games and causing trouble, then I see this is perhaps the final and most drastic option.

Phantom Gossiper wrote:Again good luck with that, what are you going to do - get restraining orders?
Maybe! Not a bad idea PG! You see this is what I am talking about. Hive mind :)

Assuming these grounds are licensed venues I am pretty sure there would be rules the SAAFL, the clubs and the Police could enforce so that when these people turn up they can be instantly removed by the police. Heck even the threat of that would just about be enough.

I definatly think they are a chance, one thing is for sure this persistant rain over the next 24 hours (up to 20mm) will make it a scrap. I havent seen Houghton play this year but Uni have some good/solid onballers who im sure will be up for a scrap.

I bet North Pines are hoping the rain just keeps tumbling as well to close the gap for their game against IF

Should be a good weekend of footy in div 7 - lets hope there are some close games so the little incident last saturday night is somewhat forgotten
