There is no rule that a red card is an auto 1 game and, to my knowledge, there never has been, although the umpire can offer a precribed penalty for several reportable offences, but they are mainly minor offences. You may be thinking of 2 yellow cards in the one game which is an auto 1 game suspension.
It is at the Tribunal's / League's discretion as to whether the player can play until the case is heard.
Not every case can be ready for a hearing in the days after a game as there are usually at least 4 people who have to attend.
Anyone, umpire / player / League, can ask for it to be postponed for a good reason.
If the League agree to the request, the player's ability to play the next week is then decided - usually by two people and depends on several factors.[/quote]

On the ball this morning Jimmy! Must be a busy one for you at work.

It depends on who can't attend if it's the player they can't play if it's the umpire they can.

That's what I thought. Would be fairly harsh to not let a player play because the umpire can't attend tribunal.

dont quote me but i believe the umpire that red carded the big fella was the SAAFL Umpires Manager and has been around a long time

seems if the player can not turn up that week he has to sit out that week or until he shows up yet a umpire seems to have it other way around if he makes the report he should make the time to turn up and not dick people around he gets 35 dollars if scuds is found guilty to cover meal cost
Now I get you, for a moment I thought the player had been reported

Its been a few years since I umpired in SAAFL, and only did it for 1 year for SAAFL as opposed to just my club. But from what I remember there was no prescribed penalty for a red card, it was up to the umpires descression depending on the severity of the incident that caused a red card, as opposed to the yellow card which was a flat 10 minutes.

It was not prescribed that the player that recieved a red card should no longer take part in the game, but the advice from umpires bosses was that if a player deliberately did an act that caused a red card that he should not be allowed back onto the field for the rest of the game because that player could be sitting on the sidelines stewing on what had occurred and the minute that he returned to the field could be seeking retribution, and that it was a safer bet for him to stay off the field.

So the general rule of thumb was that the red carded player was off for the rest of the game, and he could not be replaced for a period of time, that period of time was dependant on the severity of the act (so 10 minutes for a lower report, up to the rest of the game for something absolutely disgraceful).

That player was then also reported automatically.

I don't know if this is still the case but I hope this helps.

Forgive my cynicism Rab, I was simply wondering why the you were holding the umpire accountable when the player is the one on report.

the umpire is accountable from sunday once the report is made its up to him to make the effort to get the report done and seen to working with SAAFL i think monday to friday was plenty of time to hear the case

at this stage you have a reported player running around on saturday to me that does not seem very smart...

Yep Jabber, this is exactly what happened to Scudds. Red carded and sent off for the rest of the game. We could not replace him for 10 minutes.....so we had 17 players for 10 mins.

The reports I have heard is that the Umpires Coach/Manager was in Sydney for the week. It's ok cos any reports at GG will have a video and more so if its anything to do with the BIG MAN.

He should've got his priorities right and cancelled his trip to be at the tribunal. I suppose it was for some pi55 weak excuse like work.

Looking at the ladder. Would most people expect the final 5 to stay the same???

Yeah two close games

I was thinking I should just abuse GG when I watch and the ump wearing away colours.
Try and score a few cheap free kicks.

Imagine if they paid it in the afl
