Check the rules and regs, the teams that finish in the bottom two are relegated and the top two in the lower division are promoted.

Pembroke 8th 4-14 43.3%
SMOSH 9th 4-14 41.1%
Scotch 10th 2-16 41.7%

SMOSH followed the rules and regs of promotion and relegation and cannot be forced to stay in D2. They were given an opportunity to stay which is also in the rules but chose to be relegated which then gives the option to Scotch to stay

Scotch decided to stay up and now have changed their mind.

Bad luck, that is where they have to play they just can’t change their mind because their recruiting was bad.

Once again Shadiac & co need to grow some balls and tell Heardy that is where they are playing as that is where they nominated to play

We have lost heaps of players over the last few years and it finally caught up with us.
We wanted to stay in D1 but both SHOC and Modbury wanted to come up so we had no choice but if either of them had not wanted to come up we would have be delighted to keep our spot in D1 but is was not to be.

According to the SAAFL website final team nominations close on the 20th of February. This pretty much sounds like Caddyshack has told Heardy if you can find someone to take your spot good luck.

If the final nominations are February 20th then Scotch have a definative way of going to D3. Simply they finished bottom last season and will go there according to the laws of the League. As the final nominations have not closed Geoff Heard and Scotch OC, has every right not to accept staying in D2. As they finished 10th, they only intimated they wished to stay in D2 once Edwardstown did the dummy spit. Legally and under the constitution of the League, Scotch are not obliged to stay in D2 it is as simple as that. If Mr Caddyshack and Co wish to invoke such a rule then just possibly SMOSH West Lakes are the team in the gun as they finished 9th last season. Why blame Scotch and Geoff only for not wanting to stay in D2 when SMOSH West Lakes finished higher and have also done the big dummy spit by electing to go down. Would suggest both are taking the easy way out but SMOSH certainly are not blameless in all of this as per some peoples posts.
The key to all of this is that final nominations have not closed and Scotch and Geoff Heard have every right not to nominate for D2. Easy.

As painful as this sounds, Scotch have every right to withdraw their nomination for 2009. Just like any other club has the right to withdraw a nomination for any grade with no fee before 20/02.

At worst, the league can reject their nomination, make them play in Div2, where Scotch can either choose to take the wallopings, or forfeit 3 games at $200 each (if after the deadline) and then still leave a bye for the rest of the year.

Thinking back there was a grade nomination that needed to be done last year around Oct/Nov. I think this final team nominations is more to do with clubs pulling out their 3rd or fourth teams and under 18's and the like. It is possible the ship may have sailed.

It would be a fair exception FC. I am sure Geoff will be all over the constitution and would have a fair idea of previous precedents (from memory Glandore dropped some grades).

That's right, it is a fair exception, I dont think that precedent will help them here though. They're not in financial trouble (couldn't possibly be  ) and don't exactly have a background of players that tend to go "walkabout".

Unfortunately their reliance on paying part time SANFL players has finally bitten them in the ass and they have apparently been unsuccessful in marketing their club in such a way to recruit good quality players and as such are now sooking about it.

Tough Luck princesses.

SMOSH are equally "Princesses" about all of this as well FC and dont think Geoff would be that delighted with your comments. SMOSH were the club ranting about how good they were last year and are well reknowned for being Princesses. I am sure the Western Suburb contingent that frequent this site would well agree. To be honest if we had a CEO and Executive that were not swanning around Ireland for 3 weeks and then spent 7 weeks on Christmas holidays at the most important times of the year we would not be in this predicament. Worrying about the competition should have been paramount before all of the juggernauts took place

No it wouldn't make a bloody difference. SMOSH were well aware that they wouldn't cut it in div 2 this year and dropped the grade as they were entitled to do.

Scotch chose to stay once Towns defected and have only NOW decided they don't want to stay up, so I don't see how anyone galavanting anywhere has caused this. If you're trying to say that if the program was out already they wouldn't have a choice Im sure they'd still die trying.

THis would be the same as Scotch originally choosing to go down, but changing their mind NOW and wanting to go back up. What would happen to whichever club was in position to take their place in div 2? That would be bad luck too.

The reason why Scotch wanted to stay up was that they have to play in a decent grade to get the Sturt extras to play. They wont want to play in D3 or lower as they are still trying to play league.

There is a big change in the whole dynamics of the SANFL and now some of these blokes know that they aren't going to be anymore than bit players there, so they have decided to play SAAFL full time.

It really is the Perfect Storm, whether warranted or not, for Scotch and they didn't realise it until very, very recently.
