I was at the SMOSH v Portland game on Sunday, and i must say, as a completely neutral spectator, it was a good game of hard, contested footy.
Not often will a side trail 11 goals to 1 at qtr time, and feel unlucky not to have won the game, but I felt had SMOSH kicked straight, they would have won. Portlands first qtr was probably as irresistable as your ever likely to see, but after that, SMOSH clawed there way back into it, and that made for a cracking finish to the game that looked over 15 minutes in..
Cocchiaro impressed me for Portland, as did the ruckman, number 16 is it Perkins or something? 2 blokes going down injured by qtr time didnt help Portland, but the 11 goals they had on the board by then did. Moody will also be a game breaker at that level too, can play that bloke..
Cibich for SMOSH was outstanding, his run will break many a game open this year, his left foot goal to start the second qtr gave SMOSH the kick start they desperately needed, by far the best player on the ground on Sunday if you ask me. Detullio off the half back flank played well also, and Porplycia was good as always, despite having 2 blokes hanging off him most of the day..
The umpires, well, I commented as they were walking out that it was interesting to have a young female, and a young kid umpiring what was looming as a game that could lose control given Portlands discipline in rounds 1+2 and the fact it was a heated local rivalry, but I think they held it together well. To Portlands credit, they were very disciplined all day and they could have buckled under SMOSH's pressure in the second half, but they didnt. One decision that baffled me though was a holding the ball against Cibich, he had taken a bounce running through the centre, and took a Portland player on, who made no more contact than an open hand to his arm which bounced straight off Cibich due to his pace and strength, and he got pinned for holding the ball, took me back to primary school years when you had to only place a hand on your opponent to get holding the ball when you couldnt tackle..
