Ok WUB here's my take on it. I hope you find this enlightening and I look forward to the topic being raised again next year!
Our whole Footy lives we've always sung in the rooms, so when we see other clubs sing on the ground we see it as "incorrect" and strange to do so. We (mostly) incorrectly see it as arrogant, when that is not the case, it's just what has always been done.
It would be exactly the same if we had sung out on the ground all the time, we'd say that it was strange to sing in the rooms.
For every reason someone comes up with to explain why it should be sung in the rooms, there will be just as good an argument to suggest it should happen on the ground, yet we probably won't validate that reason because we already make our mind up that what is happening is incorrect!
Peoples opinions on this topic will invariably be decided by whatever practice his or her club has adopted, as there is no reason to suggest this is incorrect.
Only the wandering club nomads that play all over the place and have no real emotional tie to any club, including where they are currently based, could indeed have an unbiassed opinion.
I've always been a changeroom singer, and obviously see that practice as being the correct one, bur my opinion would probably be different if I spent 15 years singing the song on the ground! I played one year in Sydney and SYD UNI sung it on the ground and I found it quite uncomfortable, but at the end of the day i also feel uncomfortable singing 'happy birthday' at birthday parties and thus choose not to partake in it.
Maybe if my club sung the song out on the ground all those years I wouldn't have the 'happy birthday' phobia??
