Or is it just that women's footy may have expanded too quickly and there actually isn't enough players yet to adequately fill the 54 senior teams currently registered? In addition to the fact that the SANFLW also added in a Reserves/Development league as well.

Thats absolutely a factor, mind you those development players are free to play at their local clubs as the restrictions only apply to league players

The country leagues have open slather on SANFLW players which I understand, but that hasnt helped.

Even sides whove been traditionally strong with numbers have struggled at times, and with clubs starting to provide incentives to SANFLW/Dev Squad players its shifted the playing field a bit.

I think there are a number of factors, and can see a shift in womens footy over the past couple of years as more developed players come through from juniors and take the standard to another level.

From our club view, we have always tried to support our womens program - and this year in particular have put far more time and energy into trying to help including getting our senior men out to trainings more regularly to assist.. but honestly, it's the women themselves that often treat the programs like a sideshow. In the past, I've seen a large turnover of numbers of players each season in clubs, but also wind back the club 5+ years ago, a lot of teams were made up of women who wanted to play footy because it was new and exciting, they were new to the sport and the standard poor. It seemed a lot more "social", now these women are well out of their depth because new girls are coming through the junior ranks and well past them... the gap is huge - in fact, i'd almost back in our junior girls at Ingle Farm to beat our womens side.

Combined with a very fast expansion and the SANFLW / Dev League on top, it's made life a bit harder.

I feel though in the next couple of years it'll settle - you'll see a good standard of footy and more even divisions, and those who don't want to improve or train or work at their game will disappear, replaced by committed young ladies.. and yes I think some clubs may remove their women's teams.
