Gunning wins Mail Medal
Tuesday, 21 August 2007
On-baller Ben Gunning of the CY Cougars snared the Sunday Mail Medal last night, with a brilliant score of 19 votes in the first round.
He then had to wait a tense second round of counting whilst he watched Daniel Girdham (Kadina), Troy Clements (Crows) and Josh Lawson (Kadina) close the gap.

With three games to go, Gunning led with 21 votes from Lawson on 17 and Clements on 13.

Lawson scored a 3 to be one behind whilst Clements scored 7 votes from the final three games to be on 20. Gunning scored a 2 vote to win the medal by 3 votes, from Clements and Lawson tied for second.

Cougars’ Evan Kakoschke won the B grade medal; and Josh Lawson won the Under 21 medal.

Nicholas and Horner tie for medal
Dennis Green

Joint winners of the 2007 NAFA Mail medal are John Nicholas and Mark Horner. Scott Brand was runner-up just one vote back.

Ten years after Orroroo pair Justin Duffy and Matthew Dignan tied for the NAFA Mail medal, the club has featured in yet another drawn association best and fairest award.
This time with star centreman John 'JJ' Nicholas polling 15 votes to match Broughton-Mundoora gun Mark Horner, also with 15 votes.

And as predicted, it turned out to be one of the closest medal counts for many years with just four votes separating the next six positions.

Southern Flinders skipper Scott Brand finished one back on 14 to be the runner-up.

The surprise performer at Monday night's count at Jamestown's Victoria Park was Orroroo veteran Andrew ‘Bolts' Byerlee who finished third with 13.

Orroroo rover Will Bennett and BMW skipper Damian Smith earned 12 votes each and Broughton-Mundoora ruckman Matt Gale and Crystal Brook utility James Wardle polled 11 each.

By club, the total votes were Orroroo, 60; Broughton-Mundoora, 58; Crystal Brook 51; Southern Flinders, 47; Jamestown-Peterborough, 41 and Booleroo-Melrose-Wilmington, 31.

Broughton-Mundoora coach Brett ‘BI' Ireland said Mark Horner was "a very worthy winner."

"He's a great player with a huge work rate and you wouldn't meet a nicer bloke. He's a very worthy winner that's for sure," Ireland said.

Orroroo coach Justin Duffy – himself a recipient of the medal three times – described John Nicholas as "a very deserving winner.

"Yeah, he's a good player, a good bloke and a good team man. He's had two really good years since coming out of colts. He plays in the centre too so he's a very important part of our team."

The B grade best and fairest was won in tear-away fashion by blond-haired Orroroo utility Tyron Cribb who polled 18 votes. Roo team mate Brendan McInnes and Crystal Brook's Nick Connelly were equal second with 11 votes each.

The senior colts best and fairest was another tied result with BMW's Nicholas McCallum and Jamestown-Peterborough's Nick McInerney polling 24 votes each. The runner-up was Tim Byerlee (Orroroo, 20) and next was Joseph Slattery (Crystal Brook, 16).

And the junior colts medal was won by Jamestown-Peterborough's Jack Pitman with 27 votes from Justin Clarke (BMW, 25), Nick Joyce (Crystal Brook, 23), Andrew Catford (Orroroo, 23) and Jeremy Sargent (Southern Flinders, 21).

What's Simon Ebert's background? Did he play some footy at North Adelaide? Also, is he related to the well known extended Ebert family, possibly Jeff's (brother of Russell and Craig) son????

GWW - I couldn't tell you about his heritage but I'm almost CERTAIN he came up the hill from Nth Adelaide, along with a few others that Sutherland snagged.
That makes quite a few in the HFL now.
