Mid Murray League

From "the River News" Waikerie, good to see last years Premiers starting well after a possibility that they could not field a team this year :D

Roosters off to a flying start

The 2007 season o f Mid Murray football kicked off on Saturday with the Ramco Roosters hosting the Sedan Cambrai Magpies.
Big changes to both teams in the off season have seen Andrew Bevan taking the coaching role of the Roosters and Magpie stalwarts Adam Falkenberg coaching the Pies for the first time, ably assisted by Ash Klose.
Player losses for the Roosters, on paper, could hurt them this season with the Dubrich brothers heading to Waikerie, Peter Gill off to the Amateur League, Grant (fl ea) Francis to Waikerie and Travis Wilson heading to Ardrossan to do a spot of fishing as well as play footy. Recruits are handy with 100-goaler two years ago Steve Hefford returning, Brad Pittaway from Morgan/ Cadell, and Jacob Hole from Waikerie to play with his brother Nige.
The Pies, however have lost two big names in Scott Eichler and Simon Schwartz to Mannum, with only one replacement so far in Russell Pinnington from North Clare.
The day was good with the temperature being on the warmer side with little breeze but the Pies started off badly with some players being unavailable to pull on the boots. A high scoring accurate quarter saw the Roosters take a four goal lead. Height was an issue with the Pies, the tall centre line from back to forward for the Roosters with Hole, Bevan, Crowe, McDonald, Hefford proving too good for Burgemeister, Costin, King, Helbig and Fiebig.
The difference at half time was nearly the same as the fi rst quarter with the Roosters having a four goal lead. Pittaway and Marr were having a good game for Ramco as were Simon Henke at CHB and Adam Schutz in the midfi eld for the Pies.
The all important quarter had Ramco add another fi ve goals but the Pies could only manage three. Hefford kicking merrily on his way to a lazy 12 and McDonald playing a good supporting role. Paul Burgy stepped up playing a good defending role with Loffl er getting plenty of touches of the ball in the middle and Pinnington having a good fi rst game in the centre.
The last term was another even contest with the heat slowing the players, the Pies inaccuracy cost them a better looking score card. The two Holes on the ground for the Roosters were popping up in inconvenient places for the Pies making it hard for them to score easily, Costin and Noack for the Pies ended up with consistent performances but it was all too late. The Roosters taking the match by 40 points.
Adam Falkenberg was happy with the sides performance, running out the game considering it was hot.
“We took some good positives from the match but our lack of height was concerning” he said.
“Henke played well at CHB all day, Pinnington had a good game in the centre and the young ones also stepped up well. We came away with no injuries” he said. Ramco coach Andrew Bevan could not be contacted.
Next week sees the game full on with the Roosters earning an early bye; the Robertstown Roos host the BSR Bulldogs and the Morgan Cadell Tigers taking on the Sedan Cambrai Pies.

MORGAN CADELL V RAMCO
The Morgan/Cadell Tigers started the game with a full 22 players hitting the Morgan ground ready for business. They were out to prove to the fans that they were not just winning by fluke. The Ramco Roosters were six down from the previous side but the stars were there. The Roosters took the bull by the horns with Hippo McDonald kicking the fi rst three goals straight and had the aging veteran fullback Mick Dreckow tearing his already fading hairline out. The Tigers regrouped and took the next centre break away with Gordon Mackintosh winning the hit out to Hissey, running it to Kent relishing forward duties, on to Woods at full forward to score truly and get them underway.
The Roosters were not having it all their own way with the Tigers kicking four straight as Gardner, and Quinn ran rings around the Roosters midfi eld. Woods in a marking contest came down awkwardly and hobbled off with an ankle injury and took no further part in the game. The Roosters’ back lines in the Thiel brothers, and youngster Bronte Willis- Matthews were under fi re and fought hard for every kick. The Tigers at the fi rst change were up by fi ve points. Backwards and forward the pendulum swung as the lead changed constantly. Nigel Hole was back to his best in the ruck with Jason Marr helped get the ball forward into Bevan and McDonald. Max Baddack for the Tigers was having another good day out at CHB taking grabs at will and getting it forward through Jeremy Jaeger and Steve Burford to Nadebaum who was put at full forward after Woods’ injury and Meyers in the pocket. Neither side would retreat as the Roosters took the lead at the long break by three points. It was do or die in this quarter but neither side would give the other an inch. The Tigers through Quinn, Gardner and Hissey drove deep to Nadebaum and newcomer Henry Brzezinski scored when needed. Youngster Daniel Donnelly got into the game more, receiving the ball through Marr, brothers Jacob and Nigel, McDonald and McLoughlin scored the other end.
Pittaway through good leading tried to extend the lead for the Roosters but put the boots on the wrong feet and only scored minor scores as the Tigers fought back. Again the scoring went goal for goal as the end drew closer. Thiel and Willis-Matthews in the back line had good duels with Kent and Brzezinski. Nigel Hole had worn one ruckman out and Hissey was moved to the ruck. He competed well but Hole’s experience proved too good. Marr took it upon himself to kick a few goals to give the Roosters a small buffer but into the forward lines it went for the Tigers from Burford to Johnson only to have the dreaded siren go before he took the mark 30 out directly in front. The Roosters took the game by the skin of their teeth. Roosters’ coach Andrew Bevan said, “It was a hard fought game going goal for goal all day. We were a few out but the Tigers had a few new faces that made the match ups a little harder. Pittaway could not take a trick all day and we made a good start but the Tigers came back well. It was pleasing to see a few young lads step up and show themselves. A great game and we were lucky to take the points.”
Tigers’ coach AJ was cursing the siren for going when it did but said they had opportunities during the match to have had it won. “It took us a while to settle and Ramco made a good start but we did not allow them to escape too far. It was a hard fought affair and we made some unexpected changes that saw us nearly get there in the end. There was a lot of respect given by both sides with no silly stuff just good, hard footy. It’s obvious we need some improving of fi tness and skills but the lads are enjoying being competitive as a team and look forward to the second half of the season.”

Morgan Cadell v Robertstown
A tight fi rst quarter in the Morgan/ Cadell and Robertstown match in what was believed to be the match of the round. That’s where it ended for the Robertstown Roos as the Tigers found their feet and fi nished the next three quarters with plenty of run. The loss of Jordy Kotz during the week for the Roos left a hole to fi ll in the rucking department, the Tigers took full advantage of this. The Tigers were roaring well in the forward lines with Max Baddack changing from defence to kick a bag of eight and backed up well by Andy Meyers who kicked fi ve. Robert Dadliff chimed in with a best on ground performance in his fi rst game for the year and Phil Jaeger put on one of his usual performances at half back. Jason Lehmann and Henry Brzezinski played a game that any coach would be proud of.For the Roos Aaron Niemz was solid in ruck all day as was Simon Schmidt in the midfi eld. Chris Pfi effer played another good game before his departure to the West Coast for work. Brad Noack gave a consistent performance at half back with Jarred Mosey and Nathan Schmidt giving the Roos someone to deliver to in the forward line.
Roos coach Joey Ross said Morgan/ Cadell were a lot different side to the one they encountered in the first match. We were not as hard at the ball as we should have been and we pulled up a little sore from last week. A few injuries did not help our cause and the ground was hard with no spring or straight bounce but Morgan/Cadell had more run out of the centre and were just the better side. We look forward to the bye to regroup and get a few back from injury. Morgan/Cadell coach could not be contacted.
Next week Ramco Roosters host the Sedan/Cambrai Magpies at the Ant Hill and the BSR Bulldogs may have a hard match against a roaring Morgan/Cadell Tigers side at Blanchetown.
