As a country South Australian football historian, I read last Sunday's supplement on the 2007 country football season with a great deal of interest. It was informative well written and well sourced and researched.

I have been researching the history of SA country football for about 5 years with the view to writing a book. I have discovered that there are a lot of proud club's out there steeped in history and tradition. Unfortunately there were a few club's in Sunday's supplement, and thankfully they were in the minority, that completely ignored their history and only quoted from living memory.

My bloody paper didn't have it in it!
Would have loved to have read it.
Very keen to know what's going on right across the state and am a lover of football/local history.

Supa - if you ever need anyone to edit your book, I'd be very happy to help out.

Yes it was Doggie.

You had better go through your rubbish bin, you probably wrapped your potato peelings in it.

I've still got it at work and went through it three times after initially reading it, but couldn't find it!
Even got someone else to have a look through - no luck. It just ain't there!

I know for a fact that the Clubs had to supply the information to the Advertiser (or the Footy Zone Coordinators)

I live in the City, and i didnt see it in my paper (and i did check!!!!)

The unfortunate thing is that i think originally it was going to be a much bigger feature liftout
(see below)

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN

The Sunday Mail is planning a comprehensive guide to country football which will be published at the end of March. We intend the guide will give unprecedented coverage of country football and will be widely read across South Australia.

But to make it happen, and to ensure we get everything right we will need your help.

Our aim is not just to include information from every league in South Australia and Broken Hill, but from every club as well.

What we will need from the Associations is.

• Name of Premier and runner-up
• Mail Medallist
• League best and fairest (if applicable)
• Leading goalkicker
• Player to watch – can be an established star, new recruit etc
• Rising Star
• Logo for the league and each club
• Fixture list for the season

We will also need a prediction for the season. We need someone to pick all clubs in a speculated order of finish.

If you have access to any good action pictures from last year they would also be most welcome.

What we will need from each club

• Name of club
• Club logo
• Year founded
• Number of Premierships
• Best and fairest last season
• Coach
• Key recruit
• The Lowdown – 150-200 words from a club official, preferably the coach, about what their expectations are for the year ahead.

We know we are asking for a lot of information, but the Sunday Mail has a long association with country football and we believe this publication will be a high-quality guide to all that is great in country footy.

What Long association??? they need to get over themselves, it's the smaller papers like the Bunyip from Gawler or the Plains Producer from Balaklava that promote and in the end really care about country footy, a small score where half the names are wrong maybe a long association, but its not a good one!

they need to get off their high horse!! just wanted to sell more papers!!

Onl;y since 1933 Rooster.

The Sunday Mail have presented the medal to the best player in each league for over 70 years in some cases.

Presented or had the medals name to be changed!

just because it is the "Mail" medal does not mean they have anything to do with it.

i realise for them to give good exposure to all the country leagues all the time would make the paper twice as big or the writing twice as small.

but apart from that, help me understand their contribution!!

Rooster - they've provided the medal for a very long time.
They also send along a person to present the medal at each presentation.
There are also occasional stories in the Mail - which is pretty cool as far as I'm concerned.
And IF the players names are spelt wrong it's because they've been sent in either wrong or barely legible by the football clubs themselves.
They don't have to provide that coverage - but choose to.

But you're right - country papers do provide a really good coverage of local football, and I can vouch for it as a fact that they blow their own trumpets as well.
