Southern Flinders midfielder Scott Mazzone has won the 2009 Northern Areas Football Association Mail medal.
The count was held in the Crystal Brook clubrooms on Monday night and it was Mazzone who picked up five first votes, three seconds and one third to win with 22 votes, just six in front of runner-up Luke Kapitola from Crystal Brook.
Broughton-Mundoora ruckman Daniel Baker finished in third spot with 15 while BMW’s Casey McCallum and 2008 medallist Matt Woolford were each on 14.
Southern Flinders coach Scott Brand said 19-year-old Mazzone was a worthy winner of the medal.
“Oh yeah, he’s a good player,” Brand said.
“Obviously he’s in the same mould as Matty Woolford, he went to Adelaide as a young kid and learnt the ropes down there and so he’s very professional in the way he goes about his training and preparation before most games every week.
“He’s very much a ball-winner - he finds his own football - and he’s a very professional footballer. Obviously the stuff he has done at the North Adelaide Football Club has put him in good stead.”
In other awards handed out during the night, Booleroo-Melrose-Wilmington rover Bradley Searle picked up the B grade medal with 16 votes and next was Broughton-Mundoora’s Daniel Harris on 13.
The senior colts medal went to Broughton-Mundoora’s Dylan Hewett on 22 votes with Orroroo’s Darren Hughes runner-up on 21.
And Crystal Brook’s Cambell Combe polled 38 votes to win the junior colts medal from George Hewett (Broughton-Mundoora) on 36.
Well done to the Crystal Brook club for hosting the event and providing a delicious three course dinner.
Good work also from NAFA president Graham McKay and secretary Geoff Lange who prepared the presentation.
