Wasted Talents

Who is still toiling away in regional/amateur football leagues, who shouldn't be?
Different reasons contribute towards certain talents being wasted - limited opportunies, poor work ethic, priorities, etc, etc.
Mitch Portlock is a name that springs to mind, have watched many of his dominant performances at state level, in limited SANFL games & of course his dynamic displays in the GSFL.
Daniel Loots is another, had everything but fluent disposal.
Anymore names, surely there's plenty of disappointing stories of hard luck or lack of work ethic.

Drew Crane from Murrayville is one of if not the most talented footballer I've played with, he takes an awesome grab and is often double or triple teamed.

Ben was as good as Brad, I reckon.
Although Brad could've played a superboot Stuart Dew style game at a higher level.
Michael Gutsche?

A while back
Paul Collier. A hard tough little nut
One of the best i have seen, but chose to just enjoy his footy rather than have a real go at league level

Different style of player.
He had things Brad doesn't and vice versa.

Ryan Hunter from Uraidla. Very talented Footballer & Cricketer who could have excelled at both at higher levels. Isn't big on training and work ethic and would rather spend more time in the front bar of the Uraidla than the training track.

I played footy with Barry Williams - uncle of Brad & Ben.
Barry kicked over 100 goals in a season from CHF in his last year of colts.
I think he got injured in his second year of A grade (shoulder) and then went on a working holiday to WA and never played again.

Not all of these lazy but had talent and didn't go on for one reason or another:
Greg Dempsey (Renmark) was on Crows list but should have done better
Lyndon Pope (Karoonda) 15 years ago
Tony McNicholl (Imperials) 15 years ago
Ian Phillips (Imperials) 15 years ago
Froggy Farnham (Imperials) 15 years ago
Rick Modra (Renmark) combination of attitude, injuries and off field antics
Dean Schuman (Waikerie/Renmark) great player , off field antics got the better of him

Slapsy, his onfield antics might have got the better of him but his on-field antics in an SANFL GF will always be remembered ;)

Bohdan Cybulka won 7 Mail Medals in the River Murray League in the 60's and 70's, tried out with Glenelg, but didn't get along with Kerley so went back to country footy again.
McNichol and Phillips both tried out at Sturt in the mid 80's, but weren't quite up to it, probably didn't help that Willmott was playing there at the time.

And another player from the River Murray League, who also played for Jervois, was Neil Nankivell. He was better than both Phillips and McNichol. Looked like Ablett, and played a bit like him too, don't think he tried out in the SANFL but if he did i think he would have made it. Also played for Glencoe in the South East.
