Guest speakers at your club

Postby Ace of Spades » Mon Jul 07, 2008 9:43 pm

Our clubs currently on the look out for a guest speaker, as its a pretty common fundraiser for clubs just wondering who other clubs have had at their functions and what they were like?

A few years ago we had Knuckles Kerley at a premiership dinner, pretty inspirational speaker with a few good yarns to go along with it, shaking his busted up hand has to be a highlight, the only down side was he's a Cows supporter! :D

2 that we have had recently that weren't too bad were Al Green and Rob Popplestone. Both had other interests outside of footy that put a different spin on things. This year we have Robert Oatey which will be interesting

we had Tim Ginever host a players concert very funny man. Also a few years back we had Max James. He was also good. But the best i have heard speak would be Rus Ebert.
We're in hell right now gentlemen. Believe me. And we can stay here, get the shit kicked out of us, or we can fight our way back into the light. We can climb outta hell... one inch at a time.

Crackers Keenan is the best but might cost a bit. He's not footy but heard Michael Turtur talk one night and he wasn't bad.

we had nuckles, had some great stories and gave us a prep talk before training on the night and we trained the house down. Bet he told ya the one about the player he had which was no good but very very big and he belted the blokes who tried to belt nuckles.

Yeah sure did.... Apparently he got the biggest guy in the pub the night before and told him he's playin footy tomorrow, only instructions were to follow knuckles around and if Knuckles got belted he was to grab the smallest bloke on the opposition side and give him a flogging. He said they soon learnt

At Balaklava each year we have a VP's club dinner/sportsmen night. Last year we had Kevin Sheedy and this year is Julian Burton. Previous years have had a couple of current players such as 05 Primus & D.Wakelin, 06 Lade & Biglands. Sheedy was excellent.

In the past at other clubs I have seen Crackers Keenan, Phil Carmen, Tommy Hafey & Doug Hawkins.

Yeah we had Dipper earlier in the year on a week night, took training then did a Sportsmans night with Gurnsey auctions and a few stories of Dermy, women and watching U2. Was pretty good

Last year we got Mark Gosgrove, Justin Cicolella, Matt Cooper and Rick McGowan to come down on a sunday to just hang around and have a chat to a few people for the arvo, they did a short Q & A and it worked well.

Saw and heard Sonny Morey at BLG Umpires Sponsors Night in June. One of best I have ever heard, well up there with Russell Ebert, Alan Killigrew (who?) etc. Had connection with old G&DFL and B&LFA, plus CDFC of course, but just a great story.

We had Rodney Eade a few years ago, excellent speaker who knows his footy inside out.

Also took us for a training session which was an excellent insight into how the big leagues do it...
