In what may well have been the first game for the year in Country SA, Port Pirie sides Ports and Solomontown squared off at Memorial Oval on Thursday night in the opening SGL Round 1 clash.
Ports are now under the guidance of first year coach Donny De Palma, whilst David Bickley (yes, brother of Mark) has the reigns at Solomontown.
De Palma was assistant coach under former AFL listed player (Crows) Damien Mellow at Crystal Brook last year.
Ports won what was an evenly contested match by a few goals.
Ben Luteria and Brady Puddy were good for Ports.
A very good battle in the Ruck with Ports Matthew Burford and Solomontown's Craig Tee both playing well.
Ports also won the Bs, with Sollies looking a bit light on for numbers there at this stage of the year.

The Bs were a bit more competitive
Had more scoring shots than the Squids but lost by I think 3 goals.
Nuggety on baller James Congdon got injured around half time and that hurt the Lions a bit
The As have a few to come back in.
Matt Tuohy didnt play and someone else, so if 2 more slot down into the twos I think they should be aroudn the mark.

Central finsished topped followed by Port, West and South.
Central went straight through, South knocked out West.
South hammered Port in the Preliminary by 15 goals and won the GF by about 5-10 goals.
West won B & Under 18's.
