Is poaching from your old club fair game? I know a bit of this went down last year, at no club imparticular, when an outgoing coach tried too snag a couple of the young fellas, and it didn't go down to well.

The incoming coach could have done the same thing but said it wasn't the way he did things.

What are people's thoughts on the topic? Do you steal from the hand that feeds you....or was atleast?

Interesting topic Dashin. I guess in todays day and age every half decent player and some not so decent players think they are worth a bit of coin. All of a sudden someone flashes the dollar signs in front of you and all loyalty to your club seems to go out the window.

As for a previous coach poaching players I think its probably okay if its the players he brought with him. I think its getting a bit much when the previous coach targets locals and starts ripping the foundations of his old club from underneath them. Doesn't show a lot of character. Yet if he's waving colourful notes in front of the faces of these young lads its gonna be hard for them to resist. These young fellas have to look at the bigger picture... thats if they can see past the $100 notes. You can't beat the popular clubman who has played over 200 games for his club and has legend status as well as being highly respected.

Not advocating leaving clubs boys but when your 19 or 20 going to uni or on an apprentice wage 150 bucks can double your income. It is sad to see poaching go on but i think gone are the days when you will see a lot of people be one club men.

Totally agree TB. Gone are the days of the really good footballers playing all their lives at one club for a can of beer and a pie at the end of the game. Of course you will find exceptions but generally they all want money these days. Sad, but thats the way it is! Clubs are going broke paying these mercenaries! If no-one paid any players these guys would still play somewhere but that ain't going to happen. Unfortunately football has come down to the richest clubs winning the flag.

The problem with this is that clubs end up paying 10-15k to retain the players that have played there for a while, or up and coming juniors that have started Uni and met new friends that play for other clubs. Good young players are always going to be offered more money to play at another club than stay at their home club and this is the part about paying players that destroys local football.

It would be nice if all clubs decided that no more money would be paid to players, and it would really be interesting to see where everyone would end up playing. I know in the Victorian Amatuer league it is strictly amatuer and no-one gets paid, and there a lot of very good players running around in that comp resisting the lure of the $$ from the huge number of country Vic leagues. This will never happen in SA as now that money has become a staple component of amatuer football, even an expectation for a reasonable percentage of 'Amatuer' footballers, you will never get rid of it. I am surprised th ATO don't take a more keen interest in what football clubs and their players are paying and earning.

The ATO would never be able to police it, same way they'll never get to tradies' cash jobs on the side...

Fellas, the ATO has a couple of rulings explicitly stating that earnings from Amatuer footy are non-taxable. If they were, the expenses claimed would actually cost the ATO more than they earn in return.

On the cash trade jobs, the ATO does data and lifestyle to income matching, so if there's enough money involved, they'll find out eventually!

Yes I've heard this too and that all is not happy at Blackwood at present. A number of locals who have been there for quite some time are considering a move because of the ongoing treatment that they've received following the purchase of a heap of imports over recent seasons. Bowen will definitely be back at Sturt too.

Heard that the Hills Under 17.5's competition may be changing to an under 18's competition. imo this would only hold players capable of player senior footy back in junior ranks. there would be some big bodied 18 year olds playin some very small 15 yr old kids as well.

interested to hear others opinion

I think that an under 18s competition would be good for develpment of young players giving some players the chance to improve their skills and body size before entering senior footy. Also i think it would be good for the hills competition to replicate what is happening down town with the new 18s comp as this would make it easier for hills kids to move down and play there.
