Take 5 of the better players out of any SGL team and they are going to struggle.

I get your point though, however I dont think imports are Lions problem, look at their team, they should be able to account for Sollies easily and maybe against the weaker Port Augusta sides. Last year is proof of that...

The have the talent its either mental (you cant buy that) or coaching (you can buy to an extent, they have the money to do that).

After watching yesterday's game I would hope some of the Bloods boys would give serious consideration to trying to qualify for the 2014 Winter Olympics; they are some of the best 'downhill-skiers' i've ever laid my eyes on!

The clubs in big strife and there would only be one person who would want to take them over that person being Brian Smith who has failed at every club he has been at. R.I.P Lions.

feel sorry for duck davies, he is the reason they are in the state they are now. none of the players want to play for him any longer and this comes from a lions league player i know and many plan to leave at seasons end.
he knew and made it known before the season this would be his last, and brian smith is at this stage the man to be taking over.

He is their best player and they certainly could have used him in that last quarter. Can anybody shed some light on what happened to him? I heard a collarbone?
I watched the game and I really didn't anticipate such a comeback. West are a momentum side and Ports seemed to be holding them at arms length but once West got a sniff, there was no stopping them. Joel Coulthard can take a mark.
Should be a good contest between a couple of form sides this coming week, both with sights set on pinching a top 2 spot.

Neary dislocated his shoulder, as he did in an earlier game in Port Augusta, but should be right to go this week one would think.

and Joel Coulthard has taken his game to a now level. he must have made an major improvement on his fitness as only 2 years ago he was strugglin to get a kick.

Lions should be able to beat South on a Sunday in Pirie, maybe West as well. Last year showed Lions can match it with the best teams but the same spirit is not there this year. Could be a learning curve for them as many of them would be used of winning most of the time due to their dominance in the lower grades. The also have a couple of guys in their Bgrade that should be in the Agrade.

Squids, you said in a previous post that you had moved away from Pirie, I would suggest this Lions side, plus its injuries & its current slump in form & enthusiasm, is a fair way from the side you remember then unfortunately.

The players are the basically the same, thats what I am saying. Lions should be 5x as good as they currently are and if they were they should beat the weaker PA sides in Pirie at least

I think Lions will get smashed by South unfortunately

Notwithstanding straightalker laying the blame squarely at the feet of his good mate Duck Davies, my view is that Lions' problems are caused by the following:

An absoute lack of toughness and hardness around the ball. Lions have a number of skilful players but no hard nuts.
A lack of imports. The reality is that its almost impossible to compete unless you recruit. Lions have not recruited this year at all. The ony recruit I can think of is Mellow who came to the club with Butchy smith. There were some significant departures in Seiber, McNichol, Jamar, Dunkley etc and Dean steele has missed much of the season.
A lack of character. Lions' local talent is as strong as any club in Port Pirie but these younger players have had everything go their way in junior grades and they havent stepped up when its been a bit tougher in the senior ranks.

Lions need to run their Club more professionally, raise some funds, recruit some hard nuts and they will be competitive again.

think you have nailed it with your assesment. that is pretty much spot on and the way they are seen from other clubs and even from some internal people at the club who know a bit about their footy.
i have watched there training sessions and they dont train for the contest.
and they are no younger then any other team in the competition, their senior guys have played enough footy now to know what it takes.

when you see some of there players laughing and joking at 3qtr time you know they really dont care! they have money dont worry. Mellow is only a Bgrader at best so i dont think they really pinned there hopes on him. I see several other lads either played in the b grade or senior colts. Pine in the Bs and buttler in the colts apparently dont want to play As??

I reckon the SGL Lions should throw a few bucks at Props ex-Madigan medallist Colin Ferme and get him involved in a 2012 revival. As much as I like Butch Smith as a bloke he is not the answer any more than Duck is.

well theres a champion name for you! he is a good bloke and was a great footballer who would certainly gain and have the respect of the players. I agree with you S.P Brians not a bad bloke but no club has succeeded under his rule and normally go backwards which does have to say that he is not a coach and theres been plenty before him and will be after that just cant get footballers to respond to his way of coaching.

simply saying that the players are not responding to his coaching and in my opinion he would of been the first coach sacked(or walk away) the lions players are sooking and put the white flag up a long time ago. I cant remember ever saying the coach was on big money? I dont need to support him i am saying how dissapointed he would be with a bunch of players that are not giving a yelp after being a champion footballer himself.

you can get plenty of $ at the lions they tell me in the spencer gulf league!! They even pay coaches who have hardly won a game in there coaching careers and have been told not to re-apply for their jobs again at every club they have been to!!.

Who mentioned BIG dollars? But this one seems to mention Lions coaches...................
