At the time Mclaren was in Division 2 in SFL and with only the promise if you win a premiership would you have any chance of going to Divsion 1. The club was losing it kids out of under 16's who was going up a grade to mainly Willunga. It was a matter of grin and bear it or apply for entry to GSFL where it was rumoured at the time that Port Elliott might fold. Well they joined with Goolwa and a opportunity was there It was the right move for the club at the time to make sure it would play in viable competition and be able to keep juniors at the club. Hence the entry into GSFL

In the very late 90's Mclaren decided they wanted to be a Div 1 club. . They got Mark WHYATT and Norm BERGMAN as coaches from div1 premiership clubs and recruited some good players. They had good financial backing but unfortunately the SFL rules were they needed to win a div 2 flag to go up and they fell short in the 2000 Grand final.
Then the spot in GSFL came up for the 2001 season. Good opportunity to play Div 1 footy and it makes it alot easier to recruit players etc. They developed a very strong junior program and won the A grade flag in 2003 based ALOT on young players.

Eagleman22. Where are those young players that you based your 2003 premiership now? What happened?

It was a brilliant win by you guys that year, coming from 3rd or 4th? As you said a lot of young players ie Allen, Feno, Loots, Hockey etc yet none play there now.

Thats the question isnt it. . Premiership hangover going on perhaps?? all those guys were only aged 19 or 20 that year. Heno and Hockey playing river murray league next year, Feno at Murrayville, LOOTS at happy valley, ALLEN in QLD. Broughts in and out. . . . Who knows why really?? I think some disruptive coaching appointments a year or 2 after the flag havent helped the club settle. . . . .But i reckon at least 7 or 8 other clubs would be happy with the success Mclaren has has across the board since they entered the league.

Absolutely Eagleman, I jus remember that year and as you say the side was based around 20-23 year olds. Those guys would all now be 26-29 and in their peaks but noones there. Must be disappointing for you as right there you had the makings of a powerhouse for years to come!

Unfortunately The yetti did not play for Mclaren Vale, or McLaren Flat and by the time McLaren was formed he pretty much was on the GOPHER most of the time.
The yetti chose to play at Willunga in their premiership inaugural year of the GSFL in 1986, because he did not want to play DIV 2 footy.

The decision to join the GSFL was one of the best decisions made by the club.
McLaren Flat and McLaren Vale are COUNTRY TOWNS and we wanted to play in a country league.
There was no possible way small country towns can compete with the Outer suburbs of Reynella, Morphett Vale and Christies Beach and the inner suburbs of Brighton, Marion
In 1995 when our juniors started we only had 19 players in our U/14 side... Steve Jaggard Coach
That whole team went to U/16 the next year
And we then had 20 in the U/16 (1 recruit...Raji who was a real card)
and 21 in U14.
Morpett Vale, Hackham and Port Noarlunga had at least 60 U 14 players compared to Us, Kangy and Meadows
in 1995 Our juniors played against Meadows, Kangarilla, Aldinga, Cove...just a five team comp
In 1996 Morphett Vale, Hackham and Port Noarlunga (possibly Reynella) then entered their second sides into div 2....A bad decision in hindsight

It is interesting to note that both Kangarilla and Meadows had the same issues as McLaren Districts...small towns with limited numbers have also gone to country leagues...also good decisions.

I must say 17 of our final 21 in A grade for 2007 are juniors from our club.
We are financially sound and sustainable
Pretty well run a good club to be a part of

Is Paul James signed on for '09?

I heard first hand he is training for triathlons this year.
If he's getting himself that fit, he'd be well and truly ripe for a good season.
