Portlock could not crack it at South, he was merely on the verge of becoming a fringe league player and that is South's problem as they continue to promote imports over home grown locals. Currently he is a big fish in a small pond, no doubt, in 08 his best motivation should be to play with another SANFL side and crack league - then stick it up South as its too late now for him to simply persist with South and forge a league career.
To say he didnt like is to say that he wasnt getting a decent crack at it, when he played league there wasnt a peep of him returning so lets be honest here.

Tips this week boys?

He was there for about 4 months and played League footy! Not bad considering some blokes are there for years without a crack at league.
You talk about playing with another SANFL Club, just another one where none of his mates play! I think that some people need to realise that as good as SANFL or AFL is if your not enjoying it then whats the point. SANFL even more so, you can't earn a living off SANFL.
Do you think that these semi professional clubs have the same culture and atmosphere of an ameture club? Wouldn't have thought so.

Numbers I disagree - he played league after 4 months, if he stuck it out he'd get further.
Agreed on the culture around some SANFL clubs but certainly not all and there are still quite a few blokes living off there SANFL earnings but this is not the argument with Portlock as he has work anyway and from all accounts he's not in it for the money. If he had no 'mates' in the first place at South why did he go out there - to play league footy right? In that case four months is not a true indication of effort.

was tough conditions on the weekend for some games by the looks of the scores.
reportedly dry at mclaren vale until the last quarter.
langhornes still rolling along beautifully, would have been tough conditions at mt compass on the weekend! glad we didnt play there. having compass and myponga after the bye i can imagine the legs are going to get fairly heavy.

So BJ, I was suprised to see that Willunga only got across the line against Victor on the weekend. How do you think they will fair over the next two games playing both Langhorne's and Mount Compass?
The only time i've ever been wrong...was when I thought I was wrong!!!

panther32 not sure on how willunga will go.
forms been good of late but tried a few things on the weekend and with the weather being that miserable theres not much to be taken out of the game.
langhornes are obviously the benchmark, so playing them at home after the bye may be an advantage although willunga have 5 guys in the zone squad. will be a great game in 2 weeks time.

Whats the go with the second half the year boys?
Willunga seem to be hitting there straps while Strath are also a strange one and seem to be running into form. Encounter started with a bnag and since have shown little of early season form but continue to hold 4th spot.
Any suggestions (after looking at the table and coming rounds) on the final five for 07?

See Mitchell Portlock is Vice Captain of the Southern Districts team to play in Pirie this week end.

Not a bad start to find a new league club!

Very true Numbers - great start I'd say. Hopefully he gets a kick (more than sure he will) as I know one SANFL club in particular will be watching Southern side very keenly.

Hopefully he does get a kick and gets the chance to play league again (somewhere other than SAFC). If so, hope it enjoys it and stays there for a while.

Victor over Saints (low scoring affair)
Mt Compass over Enc Bay (by plenty, unless Stokes plays forward)
Willunga over Creeks (no Tim Follett, Please return soon Josh King)
Strath over McLaren (Walsh to dominate, Duffield 5+ goals)
Myponga (Who'll stand Sterzl? could be the difference)

LF Chris Butler has been limited in game time and training as he has work committments and sadly Garth Reynolds is having the year off.

This is gonna be an absolute bumper round.

My selections are...

Victor over the Saints 60-70 points
Mt Compass over the Bays in a thriller 1-10 points
Strath over McLaren 20-30 points
Myponga over Yank in a close one 10-20 points

As for the top of the table clash between Willunga and Langhorne Creek its gonna be a flip of the coin. Too close to pick a winner... all I can say is get down to Willunga oval if you wanna see one of the best games of country footy $5 can buy.
