No big loss there Eags! Would have liked to see how you went preparing a pitch though as I'm sure it would have been a belter and up in the les burdett standards.

Thanks for shortening the price with that $10 bet on souths for all three flags. We will take it one game at at a time ( a cliche heard a million times) and that means Charlton will be our first targets. A bit unsettling having players in one week and then out again as we had with Tasman's last year when players go fishing and even tougher on the players to find form when there not playing each week. SES get that during harvest although unfortunately that might not happen this year.

NZ any chance tonight do you think?? Ponting came out saying that Flemings wicket is the key which is a big call. I don't think you can make semi finals of anything with just one player. Not sure else who has been performing for NZ but the slow wickets would suit Vettori and there medium pacers.

[quote="another grub"]cricketer of the year....

Ben Smith $3
Troy Sargeant $3.5
Adam Gourlay $4
Craig Riedy $6
Ben Hogan $12
P Newman $12
M Smith $16
A Ryan $21
Adam Hage $26
Craig Dorward $33
J Fauser $33
R Whillas $501
P White $10,001
L Knight $1,001
V Coulthard $1,001
L Yancic $1,001
L Harder $1,001
B Keast $1,001

Hey Grub

Sarge might miss a few throughout the season so a bit short, Hogan goes fishing as will matt smith so they might miss a few games also, Reidy won easily last year and as skipper will bowl every week and bat at five so the 6/1 is great odds. Ben Smith would have to be fav as long as a few others can stay with him while batting, he should go very close.

What odd's the games this weekend for start of round 1??

Souths V Charlton
SES V Tasmans
Tod River V Waybacks

Load up on Eags for the MVP.. Only challenger will be the big Goo, only if Reidy gives him a bowl early enough..
Been away and haven't posted for ages but have keep an eye of the scores.. Agree with Eags that Souths look the team to beat and that Charlton and Tasmans will be there challengers.. Sorry Eags but I reckon you will be a one man band out there this year, unless some of the old boys rediscover some form.. Will still make the 4 and then anything can happen.
Toddies will be very competitive and will shock a few sides and Waybacks have a very very young side which will take a year or two to become a force...

All the best to each club and hope we see some close, good spirited cricket...

Not so sure about a one man band Scoob, I reckon this side reads ok at full strength

B Smith
D Parker
J Wagner
S Warhurst
T Coombe
Jules Doudle
David Doudle
C McGown
C Meaney
L Morgan
H Myers

I'm about the only out and we've gained Fridge and Sticka. What odds for Fridge in the MVP?

AG, You should get plenty of money for Charlton at those odds since they are going to go through undefeated. They should put their cricket trip money on with you at those odds.

That SES side looks good on paper WCP! Big loss with you not playing after picking up plenty of wickets last year including me in the grand final. Noticed you left the young lads out and went with the old timers! Surely stiffy and others would like a couple of 17/18 year olds to get a game and give them a hand throughout our plethera of games this year. Out with the old and in with the new might help the club develop some young players for the future.
Waybacks are doing this at the moment and good to see Bascombe, Grove, mitchell and these guys getting the chance. Will mean a very strong club in the coming years once they progress and under the captaincy of Newman and Sarge there, they have some quality leaders to teach them.

You are dead right Puma.. You need to get a good mix of youth and experience to keep being up there with a chance of win flags.. Sure you might have a year or two when you struggle but then you have 5-6 years where you hope to win a couple of flags.. I think Waybacks have always tried to do that and the number of flags they have won would say its a good policy..
Thats why I reckon Charlton would be shattered if they don't win a flag in the next 2 years..

WCP, take on board what you say.. That team on paper is very good and on its day will win 90% of the time but surely you must be concerned with the average age of that side.. What does the future hold for SES in 3-5 years when most of these guys will be past it... Wouldn't it be good to try and find some youngsters and get them into the side so they can takeover the mantle in years to come...

It's a massive concern for us, we've been aware of the ageing list for about three or four years but we have a problem. Our Colts play in a different comp that is only 24 overs per innings played on Saturday mornings. A lot don't continue with cricket after this and the only real talent to come from that side is Matt Packer (15) and Boyd West (14), both still a couple of years away, although Matt is a very good leggy and could play now. But then the next problem kicks in, the colts play at Karkoo etc and can't get back down in time. Greg Packer plays B's and he can't get Matt to A's after the colts and himself to B's. We need a colts team in Lincoln but the talent just isn't there and the shorter version probably works better for them.

Of the younger blokes we do have, Jaencshy & Watto are getting a go but both would need to improve dramatically to get an A grade spot at the end of the year.

Of my list, 6 blokes are still playing from the old Southern Eyre comp and our PL success has been because of these blokes playing on with the new SES. Lunch, Tuffy & Skinny are nearly done, Stiffy loves cricket and may revert to leggies (he's very good at them!!) to get a couple more years out, but yes, there could be a problem for us in 2-3 years.

How many blokes are going to the Adelaide test? With cricket Saturday and then Henderson Shield up at Kimba on Sunday, it will be interesting to see who will be playing!

How is everyones recruiting going?
We had our first recruiting commitee meeting last week and the mood is very posative. The meeting lasted for 3 hours sorting through our playing list and possible replacements.
The way we will tackle our recruiting this year is to be open and honest, everything is out on the table. We will talk openly about anything to anyone.
Best Wishes to Adie Searle who has indicated he will not be playing next year. Has been a great servent of the club and fine example for the juniors for the last 12 years.
Our new recruiting manager has come up with some wonderful ideas on how to attract players and new members to the club.
Over 30 letters have been sent out to talk to prospective players.
The businesses support with offers of employment will go a long way in helping us attract new talent. It will be hard for us to compete with the rich clubs Lincoln South, Waybacks and Marble Range but this good employment gives us a good selling tool.
The Friday nights is building up with more interest/numbers happening with the social football. A great way to keep fit over the summer months. Anyone is welcome to come and try, we have reduced the fee to $2 per game which allows anyone to have a kick. The club is going to introduce a happy hour after the game/games to entice a few more to come in for a drink.
