Hills Football League

Postby The Crumber » Sun Jun 03, 2007 10:25 pm

I saw Cally and Torrens Valley yesterday. Both sides looked well-manned initially but Cally very slow to start. Only 40 or so spectators under cover, but there was a ripple early amongst them in the first quarter that another big loss would happen for the Eagles. It seemed that the game was being played in slo-mo. But it became a competition late in the first qu and seemed set for a good day, but the gap widened thereafter and didn't come close after that. The little indigenous fellow I think I mistakenly identified as Ryan Fox a couple of posts ago (as per budget info) turned out to be Nelson Miller and had collected 15 kicks by half time for the Eagles. But he was the only outstanding contributor, whereas TV had plenty. Cally persistently played across-ground football which inevitably came undone, and in wet conditions the TV heavyweights prevailed. I wandered out for the 3/4 time address and found the ground to be incredibly spongy although it appeared in great condition from over the fence. My feet sank several centimetres in places. Troy Bond addressed the players and was impressively articulate, strategic and positive. Coach Ashley Barnett was calm and assertive. The obvious standout fact on the day was clearly Cally's ineptitude in the wet. They really need to start training with weights on their feet. They should have played much better football but would probably have lost anyway. Bit of a comeback late in the game. On the whole, a very lack-lustre game.

RE: The Budget, or Final Siren or whatever it is.......................On another note guys, I reckon those of us who have created a bit of a ripple lately regarding bogus "Letters to the Editor' have made a difference. It was very satisfying to note that this week's Budget saw Monica and all her 'out there' friends apparently taking a winter sojourn for a week or two. hopefully minding their own business in front of a fire with someone who cares!

And on an even better note, some of us got a jumper in "The Last Word" on the back page. We might recognise our own re-worded stuff. compliments of this site, which appears under the guise of new gosspi. Does this all mean we are now authentic??? Hell, a coupla weeks ago we were the enemy!!!

Cos god knows all the lads from Happy Valley have their hands out for petrol money cos they can't afford the ten minute trip, better get on blackwood's back cos half the team lives in Eden Hills. You Idiot!

There is only 1 senior player at Ironbank Cherry Gardens Footy Club who can proudly say they live in Ironbank and I cant think of any players from Cherry Gardens :o Seems our recruits never leave, ever wondered why?

Just on the weekends results, Mt Barker now pushing for a Top 5 spot, Won the last 3 games after loosing the 1st 4... There next games are Shanty and Birdwood, keep an eye on the ladder

Yes the IB Birdwood game was a very uninspiring game to watch and play in. Apart from of course the high flying Daniel Exelby screamer in the last qtr followed by showing the crowd the ball while pushing back off the mark. Never seen him get off the ground let alone that high. Modra Style!
Didn't seem to be any emotion in the game whatsoever and lil dissapointingly IB just went through the paces. Half time rev up from Coach Exelby made sure things were stepped up in 2nd half and ran away with it in the end. Birdwood fought well all day and I dare say if they do that in all their games this year theres no reason they couldnt sneak a win.

Where is the association game being played guys??

Quick wrap up of Lofty V Bridgey...
Standard slow devil start, with only 2 goals in it up until about 10 mins into the second quarter.
It appeared as though the Raiders weren't sure how to play their own oval, which used to be the biggest advantage.
One thing that shone out for me was Lofty's baclkline's willingness to take grabs, and not punch or paddle the ball. That showed pure confidence.
LAst year the Devs went to Shanty and won by 15 goals, then the return fixture was 200 points.
With 20 goals between 'em on Saturday, the secnd round could be REAL messy. Big gap between the teams.

Looks as though the 1100 dollars a week being spent for the maclean boys at uraidla seem to be working. Kane getting a best on ground.

Good decision by Joel Brown to come back to Uri's after abandoning them. He kicks a bag nearly every week.

I am starting to think that the hills league should rename themselves the "over the hill" league with Blackwood, Lobethal and Bridgewater all sporting dads army! The average age of those teams must be close to 40!

I reckon someone should start up a mobile physio by the sideline as all the old farts would be lining up from a mile away.

But in all seriousness, surely having maybe one older fella around a group of youngsters is a good idea, but not having 5 or 6. Clubs will not experience future success.

Any comments??

We played against Kangarilla on the weekend and got beaten very handily in a game where we didn't really know what to expect but we knew they'd come out firing after what happened the week before. We started off well and were only a goal down at quarter time on a Kangarilla Oval that was in very good condition considering the amount of recent rain that we have had. They destroyed us by nine goal to one in the second quarter when they took control in the ruck and on ball division. That quarter was basically the difference in the game.
For the 'Roos, Michael Raidis showed his class mopping up off a half back flank, Wakefield was good once again, veteran Heath Thorpe stepped up well to cover for a few absentee, while Burton and Ewens were also very good and it was a real test for yours truly in the second half moving on to Guitink after he'd kicked 7 in the first half. Guitink is 'only' about 6'2 but he certainly plays a lot taller than that.
For us, David Murphy was sensational again and we're lucky to have him, Adam Wilkey continued his good form in his first year at the club, Russell Long was always dangerous on the ball and around goals, wily veteran Craig Lallard continued his good form off half back and former Best and Fairest winner Brandon Burdett played very well after having not played much A grade football since 2001.

Not much to report on for the Ironbank v Birdwood clash magpie, both A's and B's were pretty ugly footy all day. Birdwood played with a bit of spunk about them for the first half and then forgot to come out of the rooms after half time, where Ironbank didn't even show up until half time. And that is the same for both grades.
Birdwood may be able to win a game or two this year, they just need to hang on for the full 4 quarters but better teams will always find a way to break away from lack lustre opposition.
A game that is proabably best left back in last Saturday so we can all look forward to a week off and to get on with next week.

No worries, Magpie. I'm keen to hear from others too.
Mine wasn't overly detailed because the Devs were just business-like and Bridgey didn't hit targets or seem to have much system.
Chook - I can't agree with you there. Lobey are old but I didn't reckon Blackwood or Bridgey were that old. Bridgey had a MASSIVE dude that was grey on top but also seemed to have some youngsters running around.
I reckon a lot of the clubs, esp. Ironbank, Lofty, Mt Barker, probably have an average age around 25/26?

Not a bad estimate for these clubs JQ, but Barker's average senior squad age is only 23. The B's this year are averaging 21yo. This will be probably similar to Bankers and Lofty. Lobey were very slow in the main game against MB with a flying 8 goal start. Lobey only kicked their first in the latter stages of the second quarter. They have some juniors but not half as much as what is coming through other clubs.

Yeah we worked out at start of year that the average ages of the A's is 22-23.... not sure about B grade but wouldn't be to much older I'd say.
