Riverland Football Chatter

Talk on any country footy league or club from the SA Country area

Slapsy, the suggestions I made were suggestions and are open to modification.

I agree that people moving here for work are worth 0, i just think that above rule (rule 2) can be added on.

The juniors playing rep footy, well, i guess if you lose a midfielder or a forward you need to replace them somehow.

Again, grey areas but just some suggestions.

If the player goes to Adelaide and then succeeds and goes onto to play 300 afl games (roo, edwards) how long do the points stay on for (15 years)? Same would apply even if it were SANFL games. Plenty of country footballers do it. Dont think that will work or would be fair.
What happens to people that get transferred to the area for work like school teachers and police officers - surely they shouldn't have to wait 12 months. Automatic zero for me. I also think anyone with a trade, degree, diploma or apprenticeship should also fall into this category as well. Exclude people with casual jobs and make them wait 12 months.
Independants - agree.

Correct me if I am wrong on both next points

From my Understanding Roo would have been 8 points but as he returned to his grass roots club he was no points. Each year a player that remains with a club his points go down by 1.

I hear the big Pete Dempsey (again) and Chad Gill to return to Renmark this year.....? Can anyone shine some light on this?? Also that they might be bringing a few other ex Renmark players living in Adelaide back for the year??? Sounds like Renmark wont have any problems filling the teams this coming year!!

Yeah, I 'm still suggesting that rule be in place, but say someone like Storic, who moved here, has a job, still lives here, but is still worth points. He should be considered a local after 12 months rather than just going down one point.

Talking of Storic, I'm taking him out for his first day of fishing on the river Friday. Could (will) be a lot of cold stubbies consumed I reckon. I will be anyway. We'll bag out on callop too. They are going off at the moment.

Berri trained last night (that's right, footy).

Had about 20 out, good numbers for a first kick and catch.

From my understanding Roo would be worth 7 points but because he returned to his club of origin he was worth 0. Correct on the points reducing by one each year. Clubs do have to apply to the league but the decisions have been horses for courses depending on occupation to some degree.

Speaking of Roo, heard he was only going to play centenary game but now lehmo is coaching is it possible he will play enough games to qualify as they are good mates? Can anyone clarify this.

I doubt it. Apparently he will be playing for one the of the Old Scholars teams as part of a sponsorship deal through the Alma.

Indy's will not be voting on this issue

Here's some suggestions I think are worth looking at:

1) Clubs be allocated extra points to use when a player goes to Adelaide to play for their respective SANFL club to cover that player's absence.

2) Any person that lives and works in the area for 12 months be considered a local.

3) Independent players be no points, they're locals already aren't they?

There have been some good points here, so to speak, on the points system. I think most people would agree that overall it is a good system, but some bits probably need to be refined. Bumcrack was probably right that it needed to be eased in with some concessions for the bottom teams. I think these three points from SS are all pretty valid, but there would need to be some pretty clear guidelines to go with number 1.

On number 2, I guess the points system does take into account people staying by the reduction each year, but I agree that should be a quicker process. If people are living, training and working in the town for more than 12 months they really have become a part of the place. Traveling players do not, hence a slower reduction for them.

On number 3, players wanting to play at a higher standard should not be hindered by a points system. With the current system, a young guy from independents might be a worthy 16-21 type player at a 'big six' club, as you call it, but could miss out as he tips the team over the points. Similarly, an RFL coach knowing his side is on the points limit may not approach an independent player knowing that they would probably have to play reserves. On players getting taken from independent clubs, this is exactly the same thing that happens in Adelaide, and here for that matter, with SANFL clubs. They take players who they think may possibly be good enough and try them out. More often than not, if they do not make it for whatever reason they return to their home club.
Don't be scared. Now is not the time!

I think one thing no one has mentioned is that a club can accumulate as many points as they like but they can only field the 14 points each match. B Grade players that move into the area may still incurr points but these only matter if they paly A Grade.

Is'nt there something in the points system about players under 25 years.

If a player was no points after his first season with a club what happens if he then decides to change clubs after his first season in the Riverland.

What points if a local leave his present club and goes to another RFL club. what points then

Definitly some grey areas. Be an interesting AGM

If he did play, would be a handy pickup as he would be 0 points as he played all his junior football with Berri.

Never claimed he WAS a goer, just that he looks it. Very confident, obviously has played the game a lot based on how he was talking and he knows "The Roo", he worked for the hurley group. Funny, he said that Roo told him he had missed that goal by about a foot!
