Believe cally are also offering kids $100 a game to come and play. Josh Hill would be better off playing at Birdwood in div 2 as he wouldn't get a kick in central div. He struggles in the NT. Saw the GF and TV will struggle to get near finals in 2011. Quality drops away quite starkly.

On behalf of the other 8 sanfl clubs lets hope SJ gets the gig

Callington are offering kids a lot more than $100 a game. Theyre mainly recruiting in RMFL. Mates 17yr old has been offered $300 a game. They obviously have more money than brains, sounds like a great way to alienate local support.

I am not sure they are trying to alienate people,
if that was their angle they would've signed Johnno to a lengthy contract by now.
Paying kids big money (Big money for kids anyway), is as dumb as it gets though.

While this applies to 99% of clubs how else are callington going to get any better? they need to recruit 21 A grade players to a club that is 60 goals behind most clubs.

They could try looking for players in their own town for a start. I have 3 boys, 2 of whom are playing elsewhere. This is because over the last 5 years we have not seen a single notice in the town on any noticeboard about the club, no-one has ever knocked on our door, no-one at Callington is ever informed about the club. SANFL are after one of my boys. So why are they paying outsiders $100 a game when my local lads have never been approached?

fair point. but lets face it with the amount of publicity callington get surely you know there is a club there and even without the publicity there isnt alot in callington so i am sure you would notice a footy team exists. what makes you think they should come and knock on your door to ask you to play for them? i agree a few notices about players wanted etc but you know where the club is if you want your boys to play for them sign them up. you dont always have to be asked and approached to do things take some initiative. i dont know of many local players that were asled to play for their town.

We DID know the club was there. 2 of my sons played there as juniors 8-9 years back. At that time there were dedicated people running it and excellent junior coaches. Then the club started to fall apart, they kicked out good people, it was full of strangers new people had brought in (from other towns). It went feral quick after that, my kids didn't want to play there anymore. And as a parent it didn't feel the same, so I organised for my kids to play elsewhere, they have never looked back and the club never even noticed they were gone.
Don't get me wrong, my kids don't play for money, propably never will either. The point I am trying to make is why are they offering money now when for years and years they have had local talent under their noses and never bothered to recover lost players or look in their own town for new ones. And they haven't learnt anything as far as I can see as I have just heard they had their annual meeting a couple of weeks ago to decide the future of the club. Well I would like to know where this was advertised as not a single person in the town even knew it was on.
Sorry for the rant, but I get sick of this. If the Eagles were serious about footy I wouldn't be having to clock up endless miles taking my kids to a club which is.

By my understanding, the level of communication from the club toward the town, in terms of advising of AGM's, games, canvassing tangible support, advertising for local players etc, is a complete 180 degrees now, to what it was when I was last involved there in 2002. From speaking to a number of people there, the club appears to be Callington in name only (and yes, I'm aware of publicity surrounding a "change of name to United Eagles". The club was formed as United Eagles in 1995, so they are going BACK to the old name, not starting with a completely NEW one).

I would have thought that, if the club and all involved with it were serious about keeping the locals on side, they would bend over backwards to keep them all informed and on side about things, not what appears to be keeping it some sort of odd Stonecutters Football Club (Simpsons fans, cue here)
Can you guess where I'm calling from, the Las Vegas Hilton...

I am avoiding taking up too much space by agreeing totally with the last 8 or so posters here. All comments regarding Callington are entirely valid, including information about the club (or lack there-of). It is a very good summation of where the club is at.
Older, wiser and been there. But still love that grassroots country footy.

Hill from Torrens Valley been offered 2000 per game at Kaniva
Cooper from Kingston offered same deal plus 5000 to sign on
Kaniva spent 200,000 plus last year and will be even more in 2011
There is some other names that have and will be approched
Information is correct as i got it from their Football Director who was at the BLG Grand Final, watching and gathering info on players

WTF!? How the hell could ANY club afford that sort of cash? is there not a salary cap? And if you were to shell that out, wouldn't you look moreso at SANFL fringe players, SAAFL guns or at least Central guns?

Is this the club Dylon Wiiliams went to from South Adel late in the year for big bucks?

If Kaniva want to pay a bloke 2000 who is more worried about how his arms are looking than actually getting the ball then good on them. Hope they don't expect him to win them a grand final cos he seems to struggle in the big one.
P.S the big arms don't make him tuff, he is quite the opposite

Just Quietly agree with you. The club would need to turn over around a million dollars a year just to cover cost with that commitment. Tell me one club that would achieve this in any local leauge???. 151 you sure your not trying to up your own pay packet.???? If I was a football director I wouldn't be telling anyone about the clubs intentions other than player's you would target.
