Did anyone manage to catch the Birdwood V Onkas game on the weekend? Obviously Onkas won quite convincingly as expected... did Birdwood seem to have any guys capable of helping them towards atleast a couple of wins this year? Surely improvements can be made from a 25+ goal loss

actually from my vantage point, ie.onkas grandstand, it was more like a 15 goal loss. birdwood (remember im a biased b-grader) looked very competitive the whole game, just lacked some polish

I wouldn't get too excited about getting close to Onkas B's. They've been poo for years. Even when we were in the doldrums, we still beat or got close to Onkas.

I think the blokes we had not playing on Sat would easily account for their B's.

Birdwood wouldn't make the 5 in Country Div.! Kangarilla, Meadows, Kersbrook, Echunga, Nairne would beat them this year.

The A grade was a 20 goal loss. I think Rooster is saying he played B's and watched A's.
Bridgey apparently let J Brown wander around, with a game plan like that, could Birdwood Beat the Raiders...?

Lofty v Onkas would have to be the game of the round. Interesting to see if Lofty are as strong as they have been in recent years. Onkas would be looking to take the next step this year and battle with them and Uris for top stop. Can they start this weekend...any thoughts? Lofty's forward line doesn't seem as potent despite not losing too many players.

Blackwood may be a suprise this year and will beat a slighty disappointing Lobey side who will struggle against the better teams.

I am backing Bridgey to beat out the Dorfers, especially at the MudBucket. Think maybe Bridgey can turn around from last game and probably have a bit more guts on the smaller oval to get over the line.

Uris will kick a mullion goals against the Roosters. Only hope is if lightning hits the Uri's huddle pre-game and even then they will still get up by 10 goals.

Barker showed they are not as bad as everyone was forboding in last weeks game v Lofty. They could suprise a few teams with several good players like Nunan still running around. They will just get up over Ironbank in another good game.

3 close games with 1 easy win for Blackwood and 1 flogging for the Cabbage are my picks............

A Grade Hahndorf 10-13 lost to Lobethal 18-11

Best M.Stansborough, S. Wyld, T.Parham, N.Johnson, B.Cleggett.

Goal Kickers M.Stansborough, N.Johnson 2 each, S.Wyld, J.Treagus, W.Gore, B.Warncken, S.Stapleton and M.Asimus each 1

Match Report Saturday’s game was one played in 2 halves. Both sides took a while to settle down and the first quarter was marred with many mistakes and inaccuracy in front of goal. It was however a close contest that kept the crowd interested with Hahndorf seeming in control for most of the first half and at half time led by 10 points. After play resumed Hahndorf scored 2 quick goals and had edged out to a 23 point lead at the 10 minute mark when a fine individual effort from Lobethal’s Russell Veenuleit saw him single handedly win the ball from the centre bounce and carry the ball deep into the Lobethal forward line where big forward Matt Coad marked and scored the first of his 3 goals for the quarter. Lobethal were ignited by this and had by three quarter time regained a 9 point lead. Hahndorf suddenly had no answers and worse was to come for the Magpies in the last quarter as Lobethal’s big recruit full forward Dion Hibberd who had been well held to 5 goals by Paul Bowman suddenly exploded and added 7 goals in the last quarter to finish with 12. Coach Gary Carlson as expected was disappointed with the last half fade out and will look for answers at training this week buoyed by the fact that a couple of key players may return to the team for this week clash with Bridgewater. We just seemed to stop doing the things that had put us in a winning position Carlson said after the game, the run stopped and some bad habits reappeared. It will take a bit of time to get used to playing the new style of game for 100 minutes Carlson said, I understand that, but to see defeat snatched from the jaws of victory was very disappointing.

Reserves Hahndorf 7-7 lost to Lobethal 10-8

Goal Kickers

Match Report The preparation to the reserves season has had a few hiccups with appointed coach Tim Lawrence accepting a Junior Development role with the AFL in Alice Springs starting in that role on May 1st. Past coach Graeme Sinclair has stepped back into the role as reserves coach at the 11th hour and his first issue was to fill the team which started the week with 16 players. Past premiership players Tim Whittaker, Adam Zweck, Ryan Easton, Chris Brown and Leon Maxwell answered the call and although all lacked match practice contributed to the team’s effort with Whittaker finishing with 2 goals and Maxwell and Zweck among the best players. Others to play well were Trent Colman, Chris Trapp returning from 12 months overseas and Matthew Jamieson in his first game for the club. I don’t take losing very well Sinclair said but considering Saturday’s game was almost a trial for much of the side and the fact that we outscored the opposition in the 2nd half there were some positives to take from the game. And like the junior coaches the performance of those new to senior ranks including a couple of Senior Colts who stepped up was very encouraging he said

Sorry, I'm not sure exactly what you're saying.
They lost by a couple, but was it the best team on the park? I couldn't make it out to Ronnie.

No it was not the best team on the park the SANFL kids did not play. One turned up and ran drinks.
It was the best team on Thursday night though.
We lost the game by a couple of goals.

alaska you never shared your opinion? What would you have done?

I find it funny how it all worked out, look at the previous u17 coach and what he would of done and then look at this new coach...

anyway, Moral of the story: the new coach needs to invest in a telephone!

Onkas

Postby Joe » Wed Apr 25, 2007 4:57 pm

If Lofty and Uraidla and the front runners, I'd like to see Onkas be the fly in the ointment. It's time they stepped up, always plenty of potential but all for little reward. Collins will have them tuned, but will just pace be enough ?

You train all pre-season sloggin your guts out then some ex-afl player or Vic country league player gets recruited to the club and takes the position you earned. Of course you have a right to be pissed, but what is important is how you react. Do you knuckle down and take some other blokes A grade spot on pure merit, or do you bitch and moan and consider leaving to a lesser club/league where a grade spots might not be such a challenge. There is nothing sweeter than shoving it up some coach who didn't rate ya through simple hard work and perserverence.

Central Tips
Lobey over Blackwood- Dad's army will not like the tiger's expansive battle ground
Bridgy over Hahn in a close one- both sides will be desperate, or at least bloody well should be after round 1 "performances"
Uris well over Birdwood (who did the draw for Birdwood, have some mercy, and Uri's, be kind, they're new round here)
Barker just over IB (told ya Barker won't be as bad as most predicted, provided they approach IB the same way they did Lofty) Kartinyeri to get a kick, maybe
Lofty just in the game of the year. One of three possible grand final previews (work the other two out) will be well worth the entry price. Both sides are very quick and skillfull, hopefully it pisses down so we can see who the TOUGHER side is, that is what wins finals. Sorry to use the F word so early, I meant f@#$*s
