They never did believe in bending over backwards to help a team mate , however plenty were willing to bend over forwards at any given opportunity.

Who were the full backs that struck the most amount of fear through ya Plugger?
Or who at least was your toughest opponents.

The toughest fullback i encounted from South was definatly Craig Hiskins. Duffy lacked skill and strength but could match most with his pace. There were a few others who got thrown back but generally the damage had already been done.

South had some sucess in the late 80's / early 90's sure but no way would they of been one of the hardest as Beegrader has suggested. During that era Riverton & Willaston were two clubs that made you earn your kicks.

How about urself Osama ?

Had a job on Sticks Kernahan against Glenelg back 1983, walked away holding him to 0.2 points.
But locally, Eddie Schwerdt and Billy Lockan found life tough against the utility.

Holding Sticks to 0.2 is a huge scalp , you can hang your hat on that for the rest of your life.

You must of been vesatile to play centre half back AND mix it up in the mid field with the likes of Schwerdt and Lokan. Suprised no mention of Danny Westhoff ?

Its a shame you were never strong enough to play fullback against Tanunda.

wouldnt have thought so. would have thought it would be left alone for a bit longer considering the dramas it caused last yr with the barossa clubs. there may be a draft out somewhere though.

As I said utility, Sticks learnt a lot about footy that day, often calls to thank me.
I played on a few decent full backs from Tanunda namely Gummy Schrappel, Greening, Falting and Trimboli.
Didn't have many problems with those blokes.
Would love to play in the modern game and stand the AK99, he'd jumped at my shadow.

any truth in the rumour about Kurtz's younger goal kicking brother heading to Ango to play a year with his bro before his time is up? With 250+ A grade games and 4 medals (2 x Willunga, 2 x Morphett Vale) under his belt, no doubt would be an interesting addition..... ;)

Brandon is more likely to be playing long after Jarrads body has fallen apart!

Don't know if there is enough love to share for two Kutrz's in the same team.
How does his brother go Deemu?

Sounds like you are all sick of the"Sponge" story but could someone enlighten me as to what it is all about. I reckon I have heard plenty of President bagging but dont know the story out at Barossa Districts.-Sorry to dredge it up when evry1 seems to have had enough of it. I live in Pirie and this smells very similar to the way Central Augusta recently treated one of their past champions in Port Augusta!(SGL footy.)

Basically story goes like this as I see it. Sponge a nice guy, not the best football but good club person and has been at the club through most of its bad times and was an assistant coach during the resurgance a few years ago took over the job after back to back premierships. Took the A grade to a grand final in his first year with a team that had 5-6 changes from the year before. Lost to a team that was close to unbeatable that year and was undefeated. last season club lost 8 players from grand final side and at the start of the year during recruiting a descision was made between the club and sponge to blood some up and coming juniors rather than recruit heavily and hence have a year or 2 rebuilding for the betterment of the club (not sponge's coaching record) Just after half way through the season an ex AFL player aka R James approches the club and expresses his desire to coach in our league. He had a contract on a house between barossa, gawler and tanunda. The descission was made that R james was appointed coach for up and coming season based on the following reasons.

1) his experience
2) potential to recruit players
3) change from existing coaching staff which had been implementing the same style for the last 5 years.
4) with his profile ability to increase sponsorship

Hence sponge resigns effective mid season and the club deteriorates from then on to end of season. Clearly hard done by but to some degree for the better of the club.

sorry for long winded story but hope this is clearer for you.

and plugger think even if occa was in charge and was in his 5 year and at the same ladder position think he would of been put out to pasture 2.

Razzman, JAMES will be awesome for the club....however I cant see how a club, in consultation with their previous A Grade Coach put recruiting on the back burner to develop their kids coming through....good idea and something other clubs should take notice in as recruits will only get you so far!!
However then JAMES comes into the equation and the goal posts are shifted...I feel sorry for Sponge....if a club and Coach make a decision to re-build for 2 odd years then they need to stick to it, no matter how hard it gets....

pacman i too feel sorry for sponge but i think there was prob only 1 or 2 coaches safe in the BLG if 'james' had approched any other club i dont even think current premiership coach would of held james out. I also believe the decision to blood the juniors is great for the club. and will benifit the club in the future. Unlike many people on here who think barossa could only win a premiership with large numbers of imports i think the core locals will keep this team going strong for the next 5 or so years.

Had an arm wrestle with "Cannons Sonneman" very big unit, and yes i won.
The Nuri golden era was after my day, didn't need a gun FF, they ran on autopilot.
Bit like the current Geelong side, had enough good players and rotations.
Had a scuffle with "The Doctor" from Willaston, he went alright.
Kept Danny Deptula goalless for 3 seasons straight, shit side though.

Jeez Osama, you must of been a gun. Tell us about your exploits against South players as I cant recall Ango being much of a team back in the era you played in?

South have announced their signings (5 Players) for the year and the reurn of 3 other players. The lions looks as if they may be heading in the right direction this year.

Deemu would be well aware how the 'younger' Kurtz goes, strangely quiet on the matter though.
With his 4 premiership medallions weighing him down his body may have aged quicker than his 'timeless' brother.
Would still be a handy addition to Ango, and if he is interested it must mean he senses 'another' premiership....bit of a flag hunter?
If Ango have an import spot (and he can venture that far from the beach), he would make a difference for sure.

Meanwhile South should set their sights on 7th, a realistic goal for a club that has a severe culture problem.
Their supporters are eternal optimists and its good for a laugh.......poor buggers.

Osama , with that sort of track record you must you must be considered right up there on the Panthers upper echelon with Tim McNeil, Banjo Linke & Hugh Remiers.

Did you have any success up forward ? you must have been thrust forward on occasions after dominating the mid field and shutting down power forwards.
