If thats the question you want answered?

think she is talking about a different united

believe united merged with karoonda in 94/95

Yes... talking about United that was just outside of Karoonda.
So yes, would be the ones that did merge with Karoonda.

Wow, wonder what that was like, but I suppose if it was like survival for both clubs then it would have been accepted okay... but just thinking that would be like McLaren merging with Willunga or Victor Harbor merging with Encounter Bay.... interesting.

So does that mean the netball teams merged as well??

(Sorry for all the questions  )

United long gone- tried to stay alive for a while busing over a lot of the Raukkan guys, but money, time and effort became too much lock stock and barrel merged with karoonda- United oval now makes a good moto x track!!
Have heard bloke called temby might also be on his way to the lions den!!

I'm trying to recall, but I remember something about the oval being 'privately owned' at the time, when most ovals belonged to councils etc.
It's sad really isn't it.
I know Wynarka folded too... last time I drove past it was just overgrown grass.
So that's 2 clubs in one league
Makes me wonder how many clubs have folded in the last 10 years state wide :(

This is exactly why the book 'Encyclopedia of South Australian Country Football Clubs' was written. If you would like some more info on the book or would like to order a copy contact the author bplines@bigpond.com

The author spent a good time of his football career in the mallee so teams like Wynarka and United get a good mention.
I'm reading a book about anti-gravity. I can't put it down.

Thanks for that ' A Mum'.

Not just for your husband, but from what I have read of your posts on the forum you have a passion for country footy as well and would enjoy the book.

I am also from Karoonda.

I'd probably actually enjoy it more than he....as he was always a 'city boy' and from the title of the book I'd say it's country based !

So what I will do is buy it for him for christmas and then I'll read it too

Yes, I was actually looking at the Karoonda Football Club website and I noticed that they are now classed as 'Karoonda Districts Football Club'.

In Wikipedia it says:
Karoonda Magpies
Based in Karoonda. The club is currently in crisis, with lack of numbers, and the future of the club in doubt.

Is this the case?? ... because that's just amazing.... Wynarka, United and Karoonda were 3 thriving clubs back 20 years ago (I know that's a while ago, but anyway)... Wynarka folded, United folded and now if what Wiki says is true Karoonda aren't going too good either.

Sad really :(

Karoonda really struggled for numbers this year and finished at the bottom of the ladder.
In 2005 they made the grand final and in 2006 they finished in the finals (3rd I think).
There is already talk of the new coach bringing players, so maybe they'll be competitive again in 2009.

I just find it mind boggling that there were three strong teams within kilometres of each other... and now almost nothing.

Is it the farming/drought.
Kids moving away from the area, leaving retirees etc.

Just interesting.

I wonder if this has happened in other districts

I think it's less people farming the land (with technology advances etc) and the flow on effect is effecting the populations of the towns in the Mallee. I know Murrayville have struggled to fill our Colts team for the last few years, and even our B grade if we have a few injuries etc.

All this talk about Karoonda looking like early flag contenders, how have other clubs fared as far as player losses go?

As far as I know, Murrayville haven't lost anyone and have been speaking to a few players to add to our depth.

The Peake boys on here seem to be confident of adding to their list as well.

I don't think there is anyone from Lameroo or BDT who posts on this site, and I don't think the dreamer, from Pinnaroo I think, has logged on for a while.

I know Peake & karoonda will be recruiting. At the moment I don't believe Peake have a coach so recruiting players at this point would be hard you would think.

A Mum,

Murrayville is the furthest East and it takes approx. 1 1/2 hrs to get from there to Peake or Karoonda. That would be the longest trip between the towns in the league. Most teams have guys travelling from Adelaide, so for them the furthest trip would be to Murrayville which takes approx. 3 hrs

Thanks for the BL,

A bit of travelling then, almost as much as the aboriginal boys in the Northern Territory who travel up to 5 hours to play a game.
