MinMan champ wins NEFL Mail Medal
Northern Argus
A stellar season by Min-Man footballer Ryan McDermid, including eight best-on-ground performances, gave him the league’s top individual award on Monday night.
McDermid was presented with the 2007 North Eastern Mail Medal in front of a big crowd which included four-times Magarey Medallist Russell Ebert.
The presentation was conducted by four-times NEFL Mail Medallist David Smith, of South Clare.
McDermid enjoyed a sensational start to the season, winning the three votes from the umpires in the first four games.
By the end of Round 7, McDermid had been caught by RSMU player Kimberley Hart, with both having 12 votes.
McDermid had gained a three-vote lead over Hart by the end of Round 14 (22-19) and finished the minor round with 28 votes to Hart’s 24.
McDermid paid tribute to his team mates, singling out coach David Wood and skipper David Mitchell, and said coaching Under-14s this season had helped his footy.
“This really means a lot to me but hopefully this weekend we will get out and win a premiership,” he said of this Saturday’s grand final clash between Blyth-Snowtown and Min-Man” McDermid said.
Runner-up Kimberley Hart told McDermid: “You’re a fierce competitor and I regard you very highly.”
Hart also paid tribute to the standard of football in the NEFL this season, backing up earlier comments by league officials in relation to the selection of the Northern Argus NEFL Team of the Year, the inaugural Landmark Cup victory and the selection of nine players in the Central Zone side.
“It’s a very good league and all you guys out there playing in it should be very proud of it,” Hart said.
The 2007 Mail Medal winner was picked in last week’s Northern Argus by football writer Terry Bevan whose “smoky” was third placegetter Callum Rohde (18 votes) of Eudunda. Others on the leader board were Matthew Vandeleur (South Clare) and Andrew Pech (Eudunda) who both received 17 votes, David Mitchell (Min Man) with 16 votes and James Vandeleur (RSMU) with 15 votes.
In the B grade medal, RSMU coach Shayne Willmott led the votes all season to finish with 25 votes followed by BSR’s Darren Longbottom with 20 votes. Others on the leader board were Brendan Hennessy (South, 14 votes), Michael Hadley (Min-Man) and Sam Gillings (Blyth-Snowtown) both12 votes, Robbie Franks (Blyth-Snowtown (11 votes) and Cameron Ainslie (RSMU) and Mark Prior (Eudunda) both on 11 votes.
It was a double for Willmott who also won the B grade leading goalkicker trophy while South Clare’s Josh Berrett won the A grade leading goalkicking trophy with 58 goals.
Other presentations on the night were framed team photographs of the Landmark Cup-winning side to association coach Tim Goodwin and skipper Craig Jaeschke, while Min-Man’s Todd Miles was presented with a photograph for making the state country side.
