Southern Flinders centreman Matt Woolford has joined an elite band of South Australian players by winning the 2008 Northern Areas Football Association Mail Medal.
The count was conducted by NAFA officials in front of about 120 players and officials in Booleroo Centre on Monday night. Woolford polled 22 votes made up of five first preference votes, three second preferences and one third.
The runner-up was a tie between Crystal Brook utility Matt Jackman and Kendrick McCallum (BMW) each on 13 votes followed by Jamestown-Peterborough pair Chris Stacey and Greg Farr each on 12. After starting his junior football at Laura-Wirrabara Matt Woolford went to North Adelaide Football Club in his last year of under-17s in 2005.
He returned to Southern Flinders in 2007 and played the last five A grade games after recovering from a shoulder injury.
This year Woolford has been the outstanding midfielder in the competition and fully deserves the most prized of all country football awards.
He said he was thrilled by the award and paid tribute to his team-mates and coaches who have helped shape his career.
“I spent a lot of time kicking the footy with dad in the back yard and I have had some terrific coaches during my career,” Woolford said.
“Brett Woolford was a great coach I had and Scott Brand now. Obviously I had some good coaches at North with David Tiller and Andrew Jarman as well.”
Woolford now has his sights set on the next two weeks of finals football. “Yeah, obviously we’d like to beat BMW this week,” he said.
“But they’ve been playing good footy this last month so it is going to be a good game and we’ve got a bit of work to do but we’d like to beat BMW then go ahead and play Crystal Brook. We’ve got nothing to lose in the grand final.”
Southern Flinders coach Scott Brand said Woolford was a model player.
“Oh yeah, dead set, his work rate is unbelievable,” Brand said.
“Probably one of the most hard working players in the association up and down the ground and for the amount of work he puts in outside of footy like Monday to Friday he deserves this.”
Scott Brand said the club will get a lift from having one of its players win the Mail medal.
“Hopefully we’ve got two games to go,” he said. “We’ve got to get over the line with BMW and hopefully we can give Matty some extra reward with a premiership medal and let all the boys enjoy it with him.
“I’m sure he’d like to give up this medal for a premiership medal but it is a bit of motivation we can use on Saturday now.
He’s done the job for us for the year as shows with the medal count so its about time some of the boys stepped up and gave him a hand now.”
In other awards on the night, the B grade was won by Broughton-Mundoora’s Damian ‘Freddy’ Freer with 20 votes.
His career began at SGL club Solomontown where he was the youngest player in the unbeaten 1995 premiership side under popular coach Lauren ‘Monkey’ Hellmanns.
A distinguished A grade career at Sollies and the NAFA Eagles followed but these days with a young family and a business to run, Freer is staring down the retirement barrel and this award certainly confirms his standing as a quality footballer.
Don Khan (Crystal Brook) was second with 15, then came Orroroo stalwart Andrew ‘Roly’ Kuerschner and BMW teen Matt Foulis on 13 each and Damien Page (Crystal Brook, 12).
The Senior Colts was shared by Tom Button (Broughton-Mundoora) and Joel Palmer (Southern Flinders) on 19 votes each. Nick Joyce(Crystal Brook,16) was the runner-up followed by Kieran Borgas (BMW, 15) and Mitchell Bowley (Broughton-Mundoora) and Daniel Hill (Crystal Brook) each on 13.
And the Junior Colts was won by Orroroo’s Andrew Catford with 29 votes followed by Nick Lang (Jamestown-Peterborough, 25), Billie Tapscott (Orroroo, 22), Tom Reid (Orroroo, 18) and Peter Lock (BMW, 17)
