Best thing about this year is that no one has whinged about the points system or paying players. Let's not start now in prelim final week. Good luck to the clubs that spend the coin. Every club does it. Some just spend more and some spend it more wisely. And every club still has a very good core group of locals. No team is made of all imports

Hey guys Im not upset just sticking up for my own. I maybe got a little motherly. I just love the quality of the footy in this league and would hate to see one club despised or looked down upon because they have the ability to pay. Long live a strong GSFL

yep, yep, yep and yep.

Whilst the top sides would usually be toward the upper end of the scale, I'd go as far as to say that at the moment on the whole the player budgets between clubs wouldn't vary as much as some might think. Sure, some years teams splash out more than they have in the past - eg Bays this year, but what is wrong with that. No club will ever be competitive in this league (or most others for that matter) without doing so. I do wonder if some clubs might have to start tightening the purse strings at some stage though. Some of the requests potential players at the start of this year were ridiculous IMO.....however I note they did get a gig elsewhere in the league though, so I guess they got what the wanted.

But the key is "some spend it more wisely" I reckon.

And it depends on your situation. we over spent to win 5 games and finish 9th but I'd hate to see where we would be at, considering we had a b grade side that couldn't get within 15 goals of other sides, if we didn't spend to add depth. Now with 11 colts coming up you fine tune the spending on class rather than bulk. I haven't noticed clubs skimping on junior facilities to pay players so play on

Back to the footy and I'm warily tipping yank by 15. For 2 reasons. The first is that in round 18 Willunga only beat us by 8, had a week off, then lost. Not keen on that form line. The the other reason is that I had $100 on yank at $9.

Hey Dogs, Do I detect a note of jealousy there mate. Does not just have to be Grapes to pay a player, could be a Bakery, Dairy or for that matter any business that wants to contribute to the heart of a region (the local football club.) Lets also not kid ourselves, all the other clubs are paying players, the amount of players may vary from club to club but im sure the best at each club are well looked after. Unfortunately clubs with money will often succeed but I have seen many clubs fail in trying to buy a flag. Whats more if the club paying the money is not social or for that matter unfriendly a paid player will not stick around no matter what he is being paid. Lets just enjoy the quality of the football that these good players bring and continue to see this competition go from strength to strength.
I have watched a lot of footy in a lot of comps, in the city and country, and by far this is the best. Its that way for one reason, the players that are in it.
anyone else notice that the people from the clubs who fork out the most cash are the only ones defending the money getting thrown around!
totally agree with dogs though, willunga's depth will be a big factor in saturdays game!cant wait to watch some quality footy at strath!
Kimusabi, Very sad mate if you need to find a fault in paying players to play for your club. If this was not the case there would not be the great comp you have. if you want to go back to the dark ages and have a local comp only then you would get what you deserve. Its been going on for years so best you get used to it.
Never said there was a fault with paying players,as every club in every league (except maybe callington) pays players.im just saying that sometimes it may be a bit excessive.

using creek as an example, they recruited a couple guns and got almost the perfect season in 07,when said guns returned home the following season the team looked very home grown and made it to the preliminary final!
Just saying that sometimes a bit more time and faith in locals instead of relying on recruiting could pay dividends!
Dont mean to single out langhornes its just a recent example that I can think of.
Having said that,im tipping the dee's by two kicks to move into their 9th straight grand final appearance!

Game over. Willunga hit the front but yank hit back to win by 1 point . Cracker last quarter. Dees had their chances late- haskett kicked one out on the full late that could have tied it up.

Grand Final at Yankalilla.
'A' Grade - Yank v L. Creek
'B' Grade - Willunga v L. Creek
S.Colts - Gool/P.E. v Willunga
J.Colts - Victor v E.Bay (i think ?)

Interesting Finals series so far particularly in the 'A' grade and Senior Colts.
Willunga finished TOP in the 'A's with only 1 loss and have gone out in straight sets whilst in the Senior Colts, Langhorne Creek finished the minor round undefeated and were never really challenged at all and have also gone out in straight sets going down today by 5 points after kicking themselves out of the game with 7 - 14.

Yank controlled all but about 20 mins of footy in my opinion they wasted so many opportunities going forward as willinga struggled to get through their press, especially in the third quarter they should have put the game beyond doubt but didn't then portlock pops up kicks a cracking goal from the boundary with willungas first entry in 10 mins, to willungas credit they kicked more goals in the last quarter than they had done all day it was a massive effort to even hit the lead if yank are to have any chance they are going to have to be much more efficient going forward as the creeks have the quality to run and carry through there press and with the likes of mcgregor being left 1 on 1 I don't like yanks chances especially since Lewis didn't seem 100% just playing up forward and 27 looked like he may have done a hammy, a step closer for the tigers but I can't see them getting over a fresh langhorne creek..
who ever thought of the saying winning isn't everything, probably lost!!

Creek to start a slight fave imo.
People will debate the value of the home ground advantage to Yank but i dont see it as being a factor at all in the final result.
One thing for sure is that with Yank making it through, it should guarentee a fantastic atmosphere which may have been lacking had Willunga made it through.
Suggested odds - L.Creek $1.78 Yankalilla $2.12

Last time these 2 met in a Grand Final was back in 1985 when L.Creek under Fabulous Phil Heinrich started hot favorite against Yank at Goolwa where Yank caused the upset after coming from the Elimination final to do it.

That was Yanks last Flag having lost GFs in 1991, 1992 & 1998.
L.Creek have since played in 7 GFs for 3 Flags.

Footy is a funny game. Creek senior colts after the minor would have been $1.02 to win the flag and even though a lot of us tipped yank, you'd expect a 17-1 team to be there on the day. Should be a great day next week. Yank's fans are very vocal which will create a good atmosphere. Plenty of variety as well, with 6 clubs represented on the day
