lets hope so. they were a fair bit off the mark last year, which isn't good for the comp.

not sure if they will move off the bottom, but should be much better.

From reading the article in the Courier the other week Bridgy also appear to be switched on with their junior programme (8 - 13 yrs). A few other clubs with dwindling numbers (couple Central but mainly Country) should take note or be left behind the pack in years to come.

This was played last week 2 quite young sides and a reasonably even game we probably had an advantage with our key forwards. In the end it stuck to the script of the last few trials between us and was decided by 4 goals and under.

Ironbank lost to TTG by a goal in both grades. pretty reasonable games. Hahndorf took care of McLaren Vale by 2-3 goals in A's and 9-10 goal in B grade.

Was a 6 quarter trial, first 3 were B Grade, Strath won by about 10 goals and then in the A Grade Strath by about 1 goal.

Flaggies too good in the B's for Onkas but wouldn't take too much notice of the A result where Flaggies got up comfortably. Both teams had periods of domination as the opposition rested players and tweaked their team. Both teams also had a number of first choice A graders unavailable. Notwithstanding, it was a pretty good game to watch and was very competitive around the ball. All up a good day.

Drove down to watch this game and was very disappointed. Cant see the point of playing a trial game when most of your starting A grade sit on the side lines or hold magnet boards. Pretty much all the Onkas guys i wanted to have a look at didn't step foot on the oval.

Skills were scrappy as to be expected in March but both teams ran the ball reasonably well

while they've been good for the past 5-6 years, before that that they went the best part of 2 years without winning a game.

sometimes a team goes up and down due to natural cyclical forces, or sometimes it's linked to financial issues (as with lofty). either way, you just have to adapt.

Correct, due to a serious financial difficulty (non player payment related) Lofty have decided to go down the path of not paying players for this season and as a result a few players have left as it seems they don't want to stick around when they aren't spoon fed success. Expect Lofty to be a young club around the 20-25 year age mark that will be competitive at times, but will lack depth if injuries etc occur. A new off field team has taken over and is starting to rebuild the club after people involved in the past let things slip on the off field side.

Yup, just the way it goes re player movements. A coupla months ago I chatted to a few of the lads & they know they're in for a tough season but it's that transition thing, blooding youngsters. The $ aspect got pretty dire.

Played against lofty on the weekend and to there credit they still rolled up with at least 12 more players then we could manage. There a grade had 17 fresh players to go on in a 6qtr trial when we had about 8 we still managed to just beat them with a swag of b graders and snr colts but they were not terrible by all means. Spoke to a few of there players and they said it is a good feeling around the place with everyone knowing there all there for the club not $$$. In saying this i would still expect them to be bottom 3 in the hills comp this year and not sure how there snr colts numbers are looking as they forfeited that game?

Saw a bit of the mt lofty strath game..
Mt lofty B grade will be bottom this year, a far cry away from the dominant sides of the past... there A grade wasnt to bad surprisingly, the young blokes were very impressive and ran rings around the tiring strath side, they are just missing some key position players.. should have thrashed straths tired team but just couldnt capitalise on the scoreboard.

Onkas didnt give too much away in there trial, so will have to hold judgement on them till next time and the limited game time i saw between TTG and ironbank is that it was a pretty good game of football.. ironbank probably just playing the ground better due to the experience on the smaller hills ovals.

Interesting thought process. I would have thought even the senior players would want a hit out before round 1. I know Onkas coach has strict methods and they have large numbers in their senior playing group so i guess they're trying to evaluate diffrent players. I believe there playing at Balhannah this week, might be worth a look

Mt barker looked very strong on weekend.

Fit, organised, mix of youth, speed and size.

Was that ex Marion sfl mail medalist Brett Exelby running around for them?
