Im not involved in your league at all but where you say it won't take anything away from your club, try telling that to the young lads that are at training every night of the week and bust their guts to get into the A Grade when then get told sorry mate, you didn't make the team because we have got a big name player coming to fill in for the week. Usually it is the young lad who has played all his juniors at the club, mum runs the canteen for 10 years and dad does all the crap jobs around the club. I have seen it all to often with these ex retired big names, coming in for cameo appearances,
demanding a heap of cash and hoping the crowd will come to watch them. I'd just be very careful when going down that
path.

Spot on. That's the exact reason we haven't jumped in head first. Don't want one player to upset the majority. Having said that, the general consensus is that players would love the opportunity, which is once in a lifetime, to play and train with a dual norm smith medalist and one of the greats. With the points system, someone that has done years of hard work would be a 0 pointer, so it won't affect their position

The trouble is when the Clubs have chased the so called BIG name players and go over the points. They are forced then to play Senior Colts to get a minus point situ. Have seen it over the last couple of years and some very good young blokes miss out on the opportunity to have a crack at A grade football . I know for a fact that a couple of our locals are looking elswhere for the chance to play higher and when the MONEY men move on , where have all the locals gone ? Risky business paying big bucks all the time.

It's worrying. Senior colts still playing colts are jumping ahead of colts who are only eligible for senior footy not because they are better footballers but because they are -1 but most clubs need to start closing that gap on the top teams and quickly otherwise youngsters will move for success anyway

What's Goolwa thinking?? Why would you chase a guy like that, i couldn't think of anything worse than play footy next to a bloke like Andrew McCleod! Take it for what it is. No offence to the Goolwa FC but where they're currently at, i couldn't think of anything better to get them going on & off the field.

baysule you are starting to sound like a winging bitch. just because you lost harvey you want to try and start fights with goolwa. your club payed mcgregor silly money so mcleod would be a great option. look in your own yard for a change and i tell you its pretty rooted. see if your colts can win a game next year. or are you just worried about hosting afl games. has jyrah miller started pre season yet.

Woohoo. mate.. calm down.. what side of the bed did you get out today.. mmm winging bitch thats a bit unfair and I take offence to this. It is an OPEN forum and I was simply answering LF s question as to why I thought he contradicted himself.. which if you look he has asked me to.. Funny enough McGregor wasnt getting much from what I know he just wanted to play football and he is a nice bloke.. Im not overly fussed with Harves now.. and as you see I wasnt talking about that I was simply pointing out the points that he takes with them to Goolwa... I just didnt like how it came about that is all.

MM I think we are looking very promising this year with a great new playing coach and a prety handy player at that.. ANd as a matter of interest our Pre Season starts tonight.

Dont worry about our Colts they are in a rebuilding phrase that all clubs go thru from time to time. OUr Junior Colts will look OK this year I reccon, AND really you need to keep up on the news if you want to throw shit at me.. JYRAH MILLER ISNT ALLOWED TO PLAY FOOTBALL FOR 5 YEARS... and I doubt that with the committee we have if they are still there when he returns he will return to the Bay.. But what do I know..

My suggestion Little One is to go back to bed and get out of bed the other side and see if you feel a little better.. OR PERHAPS YOU SHOULD GO BACK TO BATTING NO 3 FOR INDIA..

OH and in regards to the AFL Match I believe the Bay were approached as they have the best ground and best facilities and are the only one anywhere near OK to hold a match of this Callibre...

Your ground wouldn't be in the top 5 Gsfl ovals. The 150k grant you got from the AFL might of helped with the facilities too ;)

I agree that i dont know a hell of alot but i thought it was common knowledge. Also most other grounds aren't considered because they have concrete wickets on them....

While it is good for the spectators and the blokes that play alongside these players, someone misses out on a game and usually it is one of the lads thats been there for years and done the right things by the club.
The part that I find hard to come to terms with is that these Ex AFL players, (and there have been a lot in differnt leagues that make guest appearances) demand rediculous amounts of money for their appearance. When they retire they say they would like to put something back into grass roots footy. And don't get me wrong, Mcleod has done a great thing in the AP lands and the NT with the you aborigninal lads, but when you've been on contacts for years of $300,000 plus, if you are going to give something back to grass roots clubs, do it for nothing. Don't demand the big $ in appearance money.

Spot on OTC . Some clubs run around rattling their heads about who they have signed BUT in reallity they are killing the local comps. I reckon the best example of giving something back to your local / grass roots are the James boys , they went back to Kersbrook in the HFL and played for nothing . In the procees they helped the Club win a couple of flags , does't happen often enough though.

OTC I don't think you understand. McLeod is a points player so a 10 year player who would be 0 points wouldn't be missing out on a game for him to play otherwise we'd we over our threshold . You'd need to take points out to put points in

OTC has know idea what he is talking about. Why would anyone in the GSFL be talking down the chance for Andrew Mcleod playing in your league!! Would think only positive things could come of it.

What about colts playing to decrease the points. This could be at the expense of a local zero pointer.

True. that would mean 4 miss out. We would need 3 minus 1's. That would be a shame but it's an option. Maybe we could play him under a false name?

Killa. First I will ask how many games is he going to play. If it is several, well then the club has to work out the points and the cash. What I am dead against is the high profile players, drifting into a club (usually one that they have never played for prior to AFL), for one game, taking the cash and leaving. Yep. great for a spectator and a player alongside of him, but I'm just not a believer in this for a club.

There wouldn't be a single amateur club in Australia who would turn Andrew McLeod away. This would increase sponsors, spectators and numbers on the track. The blokes who miss out will understand if the coach is a good communicator, which I'm sure zac will be.

Im not saying necessarily its a terrible idea recruiting McLeod but I'm not sure all clubs would do it for the salary reported on here, and for only 6 games.

Then there's also his degenerative knee condition from his Crows days.

In saying that, Im sure if he plays it will add a lot of interest within the GSFL, similar to Modra.

GSFL Movements

Postby White Line Fever » Mon Dec 05, 2011 8:53 am

Are people serious here???!!???

You guys are the biggest wet blankets in SA.

A chance to have one of the greats of the game playing in your league and a struggling club to have an opportunity to train, warm up and play alongside a superstar is what footy is all about.

Do whatever it takes for it to happen I say!!
