He has Roo connections.

Phil Smith hasn't committed to anything as yet Bluey, but yes, being a 100-goal a year forward I reckon he would attract a reasonable figure.

Whether he will be seeking such a sum, well, that's yet to be ascertained.

Written in a very bitter tone though. What's wrong? Can't accept players getting paid yet?

Certainly accept players getting paid but Cobra seems to think that he will almost play for nothing which we all know is crazy.
It would be very interesting to see if Smith does return to Whyalla and as stated that Oliver is a near certainty to play there salary cap would be obviously stretched to the limit wouldnt you think? Seeing how they already have Manfield,Fiebig,Burgess etc already on good contracts and then to fit in Van hoof,Oliver and Smith and thats without saying that Usher and possibly Carter wont be receiving nice size match payments.
But good luck to them if the can pull it off they would have had an awesome off season recruiting

I think you may be surprised about how things work there.

I'm pretty sure Burgess isn't on money, just beer tickets.

He took a cut a few years back along with a few other senior players including Waylon.

They could be re-negotiating to fit them in like puzzle pieces and that's what I think will be happening.

Also dont be fooled into thinking that Phil Smith wont be getting paid any money for coming back just because he is Waylon's mate he will be getting paid nicely dont you worry ......

I do not live in Whyalla but definately count myself as a Roo's person having played there for 15 years and pretty sure i know Phil a little bit better than most and obviously he will not play for free but he will not ask for anything like he has been on in the past and if he lives in Whyalla he will play for Roopena.

Either way, Roopena are a very well run club and are very financial.
If they have the money why shouldn't they try and get the best team possible, at the end of the day the main thing is winning premierships.

Cobra thats important but mercenaries are not great for clubs either, do you need examples.? think carefully about it you get 4 new guys putting out there hand and the other 17 getting a schnitzel pack whilst there output on the park is as good, does not create a happy club.

Smith an exception he is coming home the others..Oliver, Usher, carter, Van whats it...????

Feibig worth his coin, Manfield hasnt done a great deal but will be better.

Just an observation

I think you will find that Burgess was on cash in season 2008 as West and North both held talks with him and both clubs offered him cash.
I do agree with Cobra tho that they are extremely financial and if they have the cash why shouldnt they spend there money wisely.
The only problem that i see is that the Roo's have been extremely financial for 10 or so years and havent produced the goods and believe me they would have used there salary cap up as much as possible each year for no return.
Money will not get you a Premiership but will help no end if managed properly.
Centrals especially and more recently Norths surely show that money doesnt mean everything and they good coaching and player management will always come out on top in the end.

I think you would be made not to think he is on money but it goes back to what i said before and that it was well managed and that North's got the result in the end.
How many other North players would be on cash compared to say the Roo's players and Westies players ??

Fully understand mate.
From what i understand, Manfield is taking a big pay cut this year which will help.

Obviuosly Oliver will only play there for a year or maybe 2 but,
Smith is a Roopena boy so there will be no problems at the club with him getting money and Van Hoof has work in Whyalla for the next 8 years apparently, so he will not be just grabbing money then leaving after a year or 2.

Usher will not be on more than the likes of Burgess or Fiebig and from what i understand Carter has asked to play for Roopena not the other way around and he will be on standard match payments.

The main thing is getting recruits that spend time at the club and play for 3 years or more
and by the look of who they are chasing the only player that will probably not be there in 3 years time will be Oliver.

South do spend a lot of money on players, actually paying them is
a completely different story.

I would think that Roo's would spend the most then West.
South may pay a few players some cash but not many.
I totally agree as well with what Cobra has said and that you want recruits to stay on for a few years not just come in play som good footy take the cash and run.
Manfield should take a huge cut as his time at Roopena would not even give him a pass mark, although he has the ability to win a game by himself.
I would also think that Fiebig would be on more than Burgess and well worth mite i add.
Fiebig probably on $200-$250 a game whereas Burgess probably on $100-$150.
Oliver would be looking to get say $400 a game where as Smith is concern i agree again that he wont get anywhere near the cash he has been getting but maybe $200-$250.
Van Hoof will still be getting paid handsomely dont worry at least $200 a game i would say.
It all adds up and the cap is only $35k remember but they will have the ability to jiggle it around to make it work no worries.

Westies would be paying Sticks Manfiled,Winders,Leigh Symons,Henderson,Nowak,Aaron Smith.
Possibly could be paying Brad Smith a bit but not a heap i wouldnt think and they would have been paying Kingsley Ware but I have heard he has left town.
The fortunate thing for West is that they played alot of kids that would only be on normal match payments i would think.
Have heard that West have signed Dwayne Colson from South's. He would be the replacement for Ware.

Kody Patterson is a very good kid. Think he would have just turned 18 and played on some good players here.
Have heard that he has signed to play for South Gawler this year as he has gone to Adelaide for Uni.
He will be a good asset to South this year, does his job week in week out.

I would agree with the sentiments on Kody Patterson.

Very underrated defender who sticks to the job.
