Mentioned on the Southern forum that Ben Stokes has signed with Marion. This is the guy from EB??? Would be a big loss, especially with Bayliss gone to Jervois as well. Will the Bays suffer as bad as anyone under the new points system in GSFL??

Dont forget that Princi has gone aswell! Will the love brothers stay if the likes of stokes leaves? s m skinner I heard that the Saints signed the Wilsons. They couldn't be too bad if they played in 4 premierships with Goodwood in Div 1, its a good starting point for the wooden spooners. I think the Saints have signed Ben Fennell from Penola as well.

From 5th to wooden spoon is harsh but someone had to be there. Has anyone heard about Ryan Lewis. Apparently he is playing in Darwin and going very well!!!

if its the same one, big solid thick set lad, he is playing for st mary's .
the team is top after 5 rounds and he looked pretty good the other day against the tiwi bombers.
they play a replay off the week before on sat at around 2.30 - 3 pm on ABC2

Fennell would be very handy, i think he did his knee a couple of years ago when playing for the Port Magpies, but would be a quality player. May even have been a state country rover a few years ago too i think.

Does anyone know the exact break-down of how the points are allocated and what the total number of points allowed in the GSFL will be?

I haven't got the document in front of me but it goes something like this.

Each player is 1 point.

Add 5 points for AFL player
Add 4 points for SANFL player / other state leagues
Add 3 points for SANFL Reserves, Div 1,2,3, Hills, River Murray, SFL or other GSFL club
Add 2 points for cateogory 2 league (ie any league outside of above leagues)

Any returning player who played juniors is only the base 1 point
Any player eligable for colts is 0 points.

Total points allowed on any one day Top 4 teams 32, Next 2 34, bottom 4 teams 36

may be slightly off here but that is the general rules

A player who has not played for 2 seasons becomes a basic 1 point player

Thanks LF,

So if we apply this to the EB situation, last years team counts for 21 points(?) out of 34.
Take out Princi, Bayliss and Stokes leaves them 34 - 18 (21-3) = 16 points to play with?

16 points could be 2 SANFL league players, 3 SANFL reserves players or A graders from a good leauge and a point spare?

That would leave them with a pretty handy line up I'd reckon.

And what if Jonathon Brown plays in the KIFL next year. Does that make him a 2 point player in the GSFL in '09?

Good mail Skinner, just had confirmation that the Wilson twins have told Goody Saints they will not be playing for them next year, reasons ranging from positions played and money (although i am led to believe this is not the major one). They are yet to sign with Goolwa BUT they are 99.9%... Hayden is leaving tomorrow on a 2-4 month trip and won't be back till early in the new year so i would imagine it hard for anyone to court him, no matter what they will play together.

Points System means no salary cap. I think we might find there will be some quality players running around in the GSFL.

The Wilson boys last I remember werent that flash they must have improved!

Your right BJ... Both played in the B grade flag in 03 i think it was for MV. Hayden appeared to be the standout, 04 Adam went to Goody Saints and Hayden stayed but played pretty well all year for Sturt, next year went to Goody to join Adam. 2 of the most dedicated hard working footballers you would ever come across, have extracted every last inch of talent out of themselves. Adam has won 3 A1 flags with them and Hayden 2, he missed the first one through injury. Not a bad bounce back from "treading water" at the Emu's... They will be very very handy for Goolwa.

Yeah thats it Mex i remember them from back then.

To have played in Goody Saints A grade flags they will be quite handy down at Goolwa if that is the place they end up.

Lets hope those bottom clubs improve and make it quite a tough season next year without the easy game every 2nd week. Noone enjoys that be it the winning or losing side. A good contest is what we are all after!

the points system is based on ladder positions each year. Jono Brown is a 2 point player if he plays in the KNTFL next year and if Ryan Griffen returns to the Saints this year he is a 1 point player!

Have creek hit the panic button yet?
All i am hearing is about players leaving and apart from Benny returning no big boys to replace the departing boys.
I heard a RUMOUR they failed to sighn two players last week and the $$$ on offer were that of a weekly wage a carpenter would be happy with!
Anyone else hearing similar?

If thats true then im sure that moneys still available to offer to other players.

Its a part of the points system is money is going to be up there like that to attract players not already at your club.

They would want to win a lot of games off there own boot if they were getting paid that much!

have they stopped and thought about the fact that now they can throw handfuls of money at players it may affect junior development at the club? Clubs that may not be as financially strong as other clubs may in fact spend all there money on players for a big push at a premiership at the detriment of the future of the club? Could be some interesting years ahead with this points system!

The fact of the matter is that they need to develop young players and retain them to be successful with this points system in place, not just expect to buy players. Each club can only really afford to buy say 3 or 4 players each season, so your not going to win doing that.

How did Brad Yeomans go this year down at saints? Saw him play in his junior days at Happy Valley and could rack up the touches but possibly burn it a little bit.
