talking about attracting players.. Heard from a very reliable source yesterday that Hargreaves is on $1700 a game and Ladhams on $1400 at Nihill. Must be a bumper crop over there this year

It seems the Freeling & Barossa Districts football clubs futures and recent success revolves heavily around player imports.

Perhaps injecting some of there cash into local grassroots football and investing in the clubs long term future wouldnt be such a bad thing.

Regarding the BD rucking issues, isnt there current coach a former first grade tap ruckman with Willaston ? sounds like they could use him at the crucial centre bounces .... just thinking outside the square. Well, inside it technically.

Thats around 34K & 28K respectively. 62K on two players for the season is big investment or gamble on a premiership  the mind boggles.

Given the BL&G has led the way in the past on salary caps and import restrictions, maybe they can be the first in doing away with imports all together. Paying imports is a hollow way to win a premiership. Doing it with locals is far more satisfying. Pay locals for their efforts instead. And minor leagues might also have more chance of surviving then! If the above is true, it's all definitely getting out of hand. That's ridiculous

Would people be happy not having the bye...

Would they be up to the standard...

How would it effect the juniors...

And what about netballers...

Eudunda never made a impact on the BL&G 15 years ago. Doubt they could now.

The mighty Riverton/Saddleworth Hawks would be a welcome addition back into the BL&G. I recall coming up against Billy Lokan, Don Dickie, Alan Stringer along with some decent local talent.

**** big oval there at Riverton too.

i think it would be great with no bye, the more football the better i say, with the neballers i dont think it would be a huge issue, they could just fill teams with the numbers they have.

eudunda is a big no no for the comp. dont think they are anywere near good enough to do well in the comp. riverton on the otherhand did well in both trials last year vs freeling and kapunda and there juniors are more than capable of doing well.

imports are an important part of the competition, they help clubs to plug a few gaps in their teams to make them more competitive.

the BLG should bring back the salary cap...

have a local component lets say 25K and an allocation per import 6K might help control clubs buying flags.

I could be wrong but I think the salary cap for all affiliated leagues is $35k.

one could say that the last 3 grand finals were financed and i have no problem with it at all.

No ones gonna care in 10 years time what it took to get one only that the number is on the board in the club.

yes all clubs have their sprinkling of imports, but gun locals don't play for meals anymore

i thought the salary cap had gone years ago in BLG. 35K doesn't get to seat at the table with hargraves by the sounds of it might get you a nice set of wooden spoons

I believe that the counrty leagues don't operate under as alary cap as in cash but under a point system which is allocates points per team.

Afl experience equal X points
Sanfl experience x points
Locals x points
Returning juniors x points

Cash is not part of the component.

SAAFL clubs still have to work with 35K which is a country league cap. The SAAFL stuffed up with this one by agreeing to it.
The SANFL have no idea either as they have never had the SAAFL under their umbrella before. The Southern League don't have a cap, they are classified as country yet most of the clubs are within 40k of the city. Go figure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let that be a lesson to you Sturt. You don't beat Glenelg 3 times in a row in Grand Finals and get away with it.

heard barossa played mannum in a trial and were belted by 90 points! Apparently they rocked up with only 25 players to fill two teams!, anyone on here confirm this? Any other trial results? Do know freeling and ango have trials lined up for the next couple of weeks, will be interesting to see how both go after a busy off season.

Na - no salary cap any more.

Just an import system which relies on population and 5 previous years winning percentage.

Has a few floors as minimum import numbers is three for all clubs - so smaller clubs like Freeling, Kapunda, Angaston and Barossa have to compete with the Nuri's and Tanundas as well as the Gawler clubs on an unfair system.

Don't worry - there were a few clubs well over the 35 K you were talking about.

the bl&g has had an import system for 20+ years based on town population and games won over the previous 3 years. it seems to be the best system of all. the bl&g reluctantly took on the salary cap for 2 years i think it was after pressure from the sanfl but the import system was found to be far more effective as there is no way of policing the salary cap. the import boundary is roughly smithfield to the south two wells to the west eudunda to the north and cambrai to the east
the problem the saafl has in competing with the country clubs is that in general every player gets payed where as country only a select few get paid, hence there is probably not much difference in what a saafl club spends and a country club.
i would say most clubs in the bl&g spend 40-50k with a couple exceptions. the 2 yoyo clubs freeling and barossa. freeling after a couple good cereal crops for a few years. barossa had a couple years where they had plenty and won a couple flags but where are they heading now, and tanunda probably every year spend well over this but not always wisely until last year of course. by the way i have no problem with this its just how some clubs operate
