I reckon the footy gets pretty good coverage. Damn sight better than the cricket anyway.
Over to you DW. ;)

Mr Negative.
Actually, I reckon cricket had a pretty good run this reason.
And...even despite my comments on the matter in these very public forum and which are read by senior representatives of cricket clubs, cricket scores still weren't sent in.

You're pretty much spot on BOM.
Sadly, as Baron and On Song can attest, it is hard to convince people to advertise in the back pages of the paper, which is where the sport is.
The page wasn't carrying its load, in regards to income and it was quiet a bit of work to get the previews together.
I'd rather try and gets lots of photos in the pages - which people also appreciate.
I'm surprised it took this long for people to comment on it. I've had very little feedback about it being missing, same with the sport scores.

at the end of the day though, surely the papers have an obligation to provide their readers with info on the sport in the community?? Especially in the country. I thought people bought papers to reads stories, not look at advertisements??

Sport information is being provided.
And yes, people do buy or pick-up papers to read the stories but it's the payday that keeps them going.

Maybe not to the weekly, but all the other media outlets get them bar the odd hick up. Realistically, most people that are interested are going to have read or heard the scores before Thursday anyway. Not a valid excuse in my book. Oh well play on.

Not in my experience they haven't got them.
Anyway, what more do you want about cricket in the paper?
You get as much as any other sport now, including football.

Therein lies the problem with a "free" paper, there is no accountability with circulation, once you come up with the advertising dollars each week, jobs done, who reads it becomes a non issue.

That's interesting. That's a perception that is put out there to counter against free papers.
Are you saying there's no pride in what we do? And that we don't want readership?

No, not really, we'd need a full page to run the footy previews, like last time.
Those pics don't take a full page up.
The other thing is, we're actually getting more local people, from a wider variety of sports, in the paper by running pics.

Whilst you can justify not doing a footy preview by pointing to the sponsors for the particular page, I dare say there are a lot of people who pick up that paper and read it largely for the footy info, and if the readership goes down so does the advertising throughout the paper! I’m sure the people at the Weekly have done their sums, but I guess time will tell whether they have made the correct call. I’d suggest they probably haven’t.

Anyway, the Pioneer are still doing a pretty good preview on Fridays (they may find their sales go up as a result of the Weekly’s lack of a preview) and on the earlier comment re radio and tv shows, 5RM do a good footy preview just before 9 on Saturday mornings on their sports show, and ABC do a brief one on Saturday mornings as well. A tv show would be awesome, but it’s hard to see WIN going out on a limb to do that. I’m guessing it would need some serious sponsorship.

The Pioneer does a fantastic job of covering both Riverland Leagues as does WIN.

Great game out at North yesterday by two very competitive teams.
Burgers was brilliant for the Rovers, thought he was higher up in the best players than he was given.
I'd say about his game yesterday, that it was not schmanzy, just a little bit fancy.
Benno was pretty good, as you'd expect, while Wagnitz kept popping up everywhere.
Ferguson was brilliant for the Panthers, Beano was brilliant as well. One of his best games.

Some good banter in the stands too. Great work by some of the Renmark blokes to get in there and have a bit of fun.

In regards to the weekly, With no footy previews, wouldn't you think that although there is lack of direct advertising, indirectly you are picking up an additional 1000+ readers that will flick through the rest of the paper that they only get to look at the footy. (as NS said) therefore this generates interest in the paper and effectiveness of the advertising that is in the paper. Everyone I have spoken to has had pretty much the same response "Thats the only reason I look at the weekly" something to think about I guess, when advertising starts to drop off even more.
And I believe that not many care about the lack of the sports scores in Thrursdays paper, as most people see them earlier in the week. Good call with that.

We've had no drop off of advertisers.
We've also had no complaints rung/emailed into the office.
It took five weeks into the season for anyone here to even notice or comment that it was missing.
I don't expect to win you guys over and that's fine.
Who knows, we might be able to justify it next season.
