Spectator behavior

Postby silicone skyline » Wed Jun 27, 2007 11:13 am

In a recent game a few team mates and I were watching two other local teams play in a close game.
As all Australians, we were barracking for the underdog, who in turn got up by 3 points.
After the final siren went, two players from the losing team approached the fence and proceeded to verbally abuse us, and threaten us before leaving the field.
What are a player's rights when he is out there, does he have the right to retaliate at country level?
Has this happened to you, either as a player or a specatator?

I was always told to ignore any comments from the spectators, maybe the reason they lost was because the players were too busy thinking about going over to you when the game finished.

I think it is very undisciplined to retaliate at any comments from spectators and no doubt I would expect their coach to have the same view.

How about personal comments shouted out.
I did hear one spectator whilst on one of my rare breaks on the bench shout out at testicular cancer survivor Matt Manfield
"Manfield, you haven't got the balls to kick this,"
Is there a stage where you can react coz that is downright tasteless.

Personnel comments are not good and with the comment you mentioned should not be tolerated.
Did any official from either club go and have a word with the spectator following the comment?

Na, finding the person who said it would prove impossible.
We've also had a case of racial vilification against a teammate which sparked a massive brawl.
The guy in question is of phillipino descent but he looks a bit asian.
Called something like "you slant eyed Fk"
Big scrap.
Also had a coach do his block over spectator comments and approach a spectator during the game.
hopped the fence and went and sparked an argument.
No action taken.

I was at that game and the team that made that statement and started the brawl
have been doing it for the past 20 years.

They still hold a grudge against the team they played that day from something
that happened years ago.

They will never change as even there kids coming through seem to take
after past players and it does not help with the coach that they have.

Lodge a complaint against the club whose spectators are from with a copy lodged to the league.

Clubs officials would take these matters very seriously.
