Republicans now out to $4.15
Now $1.19 to $4.50...

The Yanks are basically pathetic - on both sides - not many of them have a clue about politics so they will get the president they deserve.

Lol. The difference is no "celebrity" will support Romney, besides Meat Loaf and Clint Eastwood. Both of which will do more harm than good. Face it, Romney is for the white religious right, end of story.

I suppose there's no chance that Romney never invited a "celebrity" to fly around the country with him. Why do you always bring religion into it? Its a crack up how people can't get their heads around the separation between church and power.
Anyway, I don't have time to faaaark around with trivia like this. Obama is nothing more than a rock star president and we can only hope that enough electoral college votes swing in favour of the conservatives so they can get America going again. If Obama gets back in we will be in for a rough four years. they sneeze we catch the 'flu

Give you a little hint on Romney. Go find someone in Boston who lived there under Romney and ask them how he was as a Governor they will give you a straight answer

I think we too often think we know a lot about leaders when reality is we know very, very little. But I do know Obama was willing to tackle the health system. Something for a long, long time has been held as a basic principal in the US is the privilege of paying for your own health care. If you can't afford it you don't deserve it is the attitude. And they also hate the idea of paying for someone else's health care. Problem is though that it's led to a very inefficient system. I think they pay something like 3 times the amount per person we do for health care. Trying to bring in a universal health care system will ultimately save a lot of money and help a lot of people, but it was going to cost the president that brought it in a lot of votes. To me, doing that makes Obama a good leader.

On another note, how do America get off saying they are the champions of democracy? The election is on a workday, you have to queue for hours (sometimes all day) and when you get to the front you might get drilled by a lawyer and if they find you share a name with a convicted felon, you have to then fill out alternate paperwork and might be excluded from voting. You can't vote outside your area, including those defense personnel who were brought in from across the country to help with the hurricane cleanup. Each state has different rules as to what you can do, deliberately favouring one side. If your party has the governor of a close state, that can be the difference. Furthermore, you can win Texas by 1 vote and get 38 college votes. Yet if you get every vote in Oklahoma and get 7 college votes. It's not beyond the realms of possibility a candidate could win 60% of the votes and lose the election.

Agreed, compared to Australia, their presidential election process is a shambles.

Our federal elections are governed and managed by the Australian Electoral Commission ... there is no such body in the US

Anyway, looks like Obama will get up as Florida will go to him and Romney is running out of states to pick up enough votes.

yes agreed it is a shambles about the only good thing is they do get to vote for who is president whereas here we dont get to vote for the prime minister. I wonder what percentage of people that are eligible to vote in the states dont

It's crazy innit. Every county has different voting methods, some using voting machines that are over 100 years old!

It's a different model. While we don't directly vote for the prime minister, many people base their vote purely on who the leader is. But ultimately, the PM gets 1 vote like every other MP. If we started voting for the PM directly they would need appropriate powers and our whole model would need to change. The only positions I'd like to see change is the speaker of parliament and president of the Senate.. Give them proper powers, make them independent and let us vote for them directly.

Voter turnout is a massive issue in the US. Obama brought out the black population but many ethnic groups simply don't vote, many workers can't vote because they can't get from work and a lot of parents/carers have trouble. Historically, rich white people have determined the whole thing, which is why the republican party are still competitive.

True. We get that here to an extent, we've had parties win government with slightly less votes than the other party. But the US system the gap can be much, much larger. Last count Romney had nearly 52% but had 1% chance of winning.
