I used to often email Alexander Downer about my objections to the issues as they came up during his time as Foreign Minister, and I usually got a reply, not always agreeing with me.
It would help if more of the public wrote to Ministers and to their local MPs when they did not like what is happening.
One MP I knew said petitions mean little as people who don't really care can be persuaded to sign them, but large numbers of individual letters do, as they indicate people care enough to bother.
We shouldn't leave it to the media, or to pressure groups who can be discounted for having their own group agenda.
